Reading Groups and Programmes
Reading underpins access to everything from novels to bus timetables and application forms. Reading can open up understanding and emotions into another world and help the child develop into an active, articulate and confident citizen.
We are often asked how parents and carers can help children develop their reading skills. Below are some ‘top tips’ for improvement:
- provide a variety of reading materials: newspapers, magazines and books
- be a good role model by reading yourself
- encourage reading every day and especially at bed time
- ask about what has been read today, and ask questions
- ask a child to summarise a paragraph into one sentence
- ask a child for specific information from a text
- encourage critical use of the internet
