S5/6 Parents’ Evening

Thank you to all parents/carers who came along last night to hear about your young person’s progress and next steps as they move towards their SQA exams in April/May. Speaking to many of you I know you found the conversations with teachers extremely useful and really valued the face/face interactions. If you were unable to make the evening for any reason, and would like to discuss your young person’s progress, please contact their House Team. Thank you.

S3 Work Experience- Can you help us?

We were very excited this week to share our plans for S3 Work Experience.  This is taking place from 27 – 31 May 2024 and it is the first time we have been able to offer this opportunity in a number of years.

In order to make this as successful as possible, we would very much welcome your help.  Would you, or someone you know, be able to accommodate a pupil for a week’s work experience?  The pupils have to find their own placements but changes in working arrangements for a number of employers have made it more challenging for pupils to find employers able to take them.

We would be very grateful for any help you can offer and hope that this fantastic opportunity will make pupils even more aware of their options after school.

If you can help in any way, please email workexperience@knox.elcschool.org.uk

Digital Academy

Education Scotland is looking into a Digital Academy and wants to hear from S3-S6 pupils to get their ideas about what this should look like. They want to ensure that young people have a big say in the design of it. Please can I ask you to encourage your young person/people to complete this as this is a really important step forward for our learners (and future young people) and how we can work flexibly in the future to meet their needs. The survey closes on 29 February - so not long! Please click on this link to access it. Thank you for your support with this.

S1 STEM Event – Tuesday 20 February

This week it was the turn of S1 to take part in a 1hr 40 minutes workshop led by SSE Renewables.  There were three sessions – one for each house.  SSE Renewables will soon start work on the Berwick Bank Wind Farm which will potentially generate enough electricity to power Scotland three times over.

The pupils learned amazing facts such as the blades of each turbine will be longer than a football pitch, weigh the same as 10 elephants and be wide enough to drive a double decker bus through.

As with the S2, it was amazing to see the quality of the posters that S1 designed at the end of the session, which was based on what they had learned throughout. Many were happy to stand up and present the information from their posters, to their peers, which showed the aims of developing the skills of problem solving, creativity, teamwork and speaking had been achieved.

Berwick Bank is on track to be fully operational in 2030 so there is even a chance that some of the pupils involved in the workshops will gain employment on this project.

Many thanks, to Pauline Allison, Ciara Jamieson and Rowan Boswood from SSE Renewables who ran the workshop. (By Mr Taylor, Curriculum Leader of Science)

Parent Reps for Education Appeals

We are recruiting parent representatives for this years’ Education Appeals. This would most likely only take up 1 full day around the end of May.  There is no specific criteria for a parent rep, you just need to have a child within a school in East Lothian and you will never be asked to make decisions relating to the school your child attends.

If you are interested please contact Megan Scott, Committees Officer directly on mscott1@eastlothian.gov.uk or 01620 827514.

S2 STEM Event – Tuesday 6 February

On Tuesday the whole of S2 took part in 1hr 40 minutes of workshops led by SSE Renewables.

The pupils were fully engaged throughout the sessions, which were designed to develop the skills of problem solving, creativity, teamwork and speaking.  At the end they presented on what they had learned and there were several excellent presentations.

Berwick Bank is on track to be fully operational in 2030 so there is even a chance that some of the pupils involved in the workshops will gain employment on the project.

Many thanks, to Pauline Allison, Ciara Jamieson and Claire McGhie from SSE Renewables who ran the workshop. (By Mr Taylor, Curriculum Leader of Science).

Parental Study Support Session on Science
Thank you to all parents/carers who came along to the study support/exam revision session for Biology, Human Biology , Chemistry and Physics last night. Another very useful and informative session organised by Ms McBride. I am sure parents/carers found it very helpful in terms of knowing how to support their young person to study for these exams and what resources they can guide them towards. Thank you Mr Taylor and Mr Boyle for their great advice and leading these sessions.

过年好!Happy Lunar New Year!

Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, falls on the 10th of February this year, and S1 and S2 pupils have been busy preparing in Mandarin lessons. S2 pupils created a great array of eye-catching and informative posters, incorporating the popular Chinese tangram puzzle into their designs. Since we are entering the Year of the Dragon, S1 pupils are preparing to re-enact the traditional Chinese Tale of the Four Dragons. We wish you 龙年好 lóng nián hǎo, 身体健康 shēntǐ jiànkāng, 万事如意 wànshì rúyì, which means good health and all the best in the Year of the Dragon. (By Mrs Zhong)

Author Visit

P7s from our associated primary schools were invited to Knox Academy to hear a talk by acclaimed award winning author Stewart Foster (author of Check Mates, Bubble Boy, and Can you Feel the Noise?), who luckily was able to fly to Scotland in-between some of our winter storms in order to talk to us about his life, his books and how to write your own stories. After the event for P7s, he had time for a short talk to some of our Knox Academy young people too. It was lovely to have the opportunity to meet our future primary pupils for the first time. Thanks to SUBC for providing funding for the event (Ms Fry, Librarian).

Parentsportal Registration

Many parents/carers have already signed up for parentsportal , and current functions allow absence reporting, data updates and viewing of attendance.

We plan to begin issuing reports to parents electronically.  This requires parents to register for parentsportal and to ensure details are kept up to date.

If you are experiencing any issues trying to register, please contact the school office for advice. (School Office)

Support

The first port of call is your young person’s House Team, should you wish to discuss any support for your young person or wish to arrange an appointment to come in to speak to someone. House Teams can be contacted via the following emails.

If you arrive at the school we may not be able to see you if you don’t have a pre-arranged appointment as staff can be teaching or in meetings too, so please book appointments wherever possible so we can definitely speak to you. Thank you.

Inter-School County Cross Country at Fox Lake 7 February 2024

Our magnificent team of 45 athletes, were well prepared and ready to take on the challenge of the 3.35km course around the stunning countryside of Fox Lake grounds. Keeping their cool along the first uphill section from the start and clever pacing through the mud and tree lined routes, our runners soon passed close to the beach and then returned into the sun, to finish just at the Fox Falls. Every one of our athletes were cheered into the finish funnel by the rest of the team and all had with big smiles on their faces as they all did their absolute best.

Individual medalists were:- S1 - Jack Fraser (3rd);  S2 - Freddie Fendick  (2nd) and Morven Kenny (3rd);  S3 -  Ava Smith  (2nd), Lucy Hall (3rd), Connal Young (1st); Seniors - Colin Riley (2nd) .

The competition was fierce and we smashed our previous records for our team performances, combining all the team members scores we placed :- S1 girls –(1st)  S1 boys (2nd) ; S2 girls –(2nd) S2 Boys (3rd);  S3 girls (2nd), S3 boys (1st); Senior Boys - (1st) .

Overall, we came 2nd to Dunbar. Hopefully next year we may even get that 1st position as we were only 10 points behind – our best performance to date! A fantastic memorable day with outstanding effort from everyone, fabulous team spirit throughout.  (By Mrs McSherry. PE)

Coursing for 2024-25

All S2-5 pupils have now received the relevant paperwork to support their course choices. Everything is also available via the Course Choice section of the school website.

S3 pupils will receive their recommendations in their next report which is due to be issued before the February holiday.

S2 pupils should submit their Google Form (emailed to them this week) by Wed 21 February.

S3-5 pupils should hand in their column choice sheet to their register teachers on 21 February. They will be notified about their coursing interview by their House Team.

Wi-Fi

It has been fantastic to have our Wi-Fi fully up and running again and the school fully functional in terms of our ICT. As parents/carers were aware, mitigations were put in place to ensure that all of our young people were able to continue their studies without this impacting them. This was done through sharing ICT suites and also, in the case of our seniors, changing the order of some of the teaching content of our SQA courses, to ensure their learning continued to advance. Teachers will now focus on supporting pupils to complete any assignments or assessments that are part of their SQA courses. Curriculum Leaders, who have been working closely with their teams, are confident that our SQA candidates will fulfil all aspects of course requirements within the required timescales and in readiness for the April/May exam diet.

Chromebooks

We have Chromebook Health Check Clinic taking place at the school on Tuesday 13 February. If you young person has received a Chromebook from the school which they keep at home, please ask them to return this to Ms Patterson, or the office, by Thursday 8 February at very latest. This will allow it to be checked and updated. It will be returned to them the first week back after the holidays. This device should be brought to school daily for their individual use too.

Measles

We have been asked to share information on Measles with all parents/carers. This give details about the signs of measles and what to do if you think your young person has them.

Assemblies

Our House assemblies next week will look at the topic of vaping. These materials/toolkit have been produced by the UK Government as it has become such a widespread concern as so many teenagers (and younger) are doing it. You will also be aware that Scotland is looking to ban single use vapes as these are the ones that teenagers are purchasing - so many seem to be trying it and it continues to grow in popularity. It would be great if parents/carers could discuss this topic with their young people following these assemblies. Thank you.
