KASG fundraises all year round and all proceeds go to your children. The Committee would like your help and support with the following:

The Duck Derby is on Wednesday 3rd June at 7p.m. at Ball Ally. Ducks cost £1.
Teas in the Park at Neilson Park on Saturday 6th June .

How can you help us at Teas in the Park?

Last year we organised a Festival Café at the Neilson Park Fun Day which, thanks to your support, was a great success with the Community and in raising funds for the school.

We have been asked to organise catering at the Fun Day again this year and we will also be having a cake and candy stall and a tombola/bottle stall. We will again need your support to make this venture a success.

If you can supply baking or give some time on the day – even one hour – please contact  Mrs Ball (01620 823 387) at the school. Our busiest time is in the afternoon to serve refreshments and clear tables (2-4pm). If you can manage the tidying up slot of 4–5pm your help will be greatly appreciated!

Your help is greatly appreciated !

The fantastic teen author Sam Hepburn is coming to Knox Academy on April 28th.

Sam's writing is informed by her hugely fascinating career as a documentary producer for the BBC, which has taken her all over the world to discover stories from people across the globe.

Sam will talk to S2 Pupils during their Period 5 English Class about the inspiration and research for her latest book If You Were Me.The novel tells the story of a young Afghan asylum seeker who is accused of a terrorist bomb attack. As he lies injured in hospital his 14 year old sister sets out to prove his innocence. A tense and gripping thriller, If You Were Me deals with themes of tolerance, prejudice and the power of lies and is sure to spark debate.

Following the event pupils will have the opportunity to discuss the novel and creative writing styles with Sam. Copies of Sam's two novels will be on sale for £6 per title. A pre order form was issued to pupils via English teachers to guarantee a signed copy of the book.

Sam's publisher, Chicken House, has organised her tour of East Lothian with East Lothian School Librarians' and respective English Departments across the authority. Knox Academy is Sam's last stop in East Lothian following visits to Ross High and Musselburgh Grammar.

As part of the S1 Business Education course, pupils have used their business skills and knowledge to set up their own Deli Cafe which will sell a variety of soups, sandwiches and smoothies.

In the week beginning Monday 11 May they will be making their soups, sandwiches and smoothies, using their own ingredients, in the Home Economics Department.  We would like to invite you to come in and watch each group in your child’s class present about their business and, more importantly, to taste the produce on offer.

A letter has been sent home 'pupil-post'.

Dates and times for each class are as follows:

1T3 – Tuesday 12 May at 9.55 am

1T2 – Tuesday 12 May at 12.08 pm

1L1 – Wednesday 13 May at 12.08 pm

1G1 – Thursday 14 May at 9.55 am

1G2 – Thursday 14 May at 9.55 am

1T1 – Thursday 14 May at 3.01 pm

Please complete the slip in the letter and return it to your child’s Business Education teacher by Friday 1 May 2015.

S1 have been working on a personal investigation of a country of their choice in classes throughout March/April.

The project content and criteria was created by the pupils after class discussion of what would make a “good” project and topics chosen. Classes were visited by Mr Plain, the School Librarian, who reminded pupils of resources available, how to utilise the library catalogue and booking system whilst giving a demonstration of Encyclopaedia Britannica online.

The classes spent 1 period researching their chosen topic in the library, where PC, internet and book resources were accessible and they could order any additional resources they required. Pupils were then given 2 periods in class to access the project boxes which had been ordered in by Mr Plain through the School Library Service (thank you!) and stock from the School Library.

It was expected that additional work be put into these projects in the pupils own time, at home or in the School Library and the end products are OUTSTANDING! 1G1, 1G2 and 1T1 deserve a special mention and a display has been set up in the School Library to showcase their projects. Great work and I hope you all enjoyed researching your chosen country!

Some of our S1 and S2 pupils made Knox history this week when the first ever set of our Children's University participants were presented with their Bronze Awards certificates.  Congratulations go to Dylan Glass, Sarah Greenwell, Rosie Greenshields, Mohammed Uddin, Millie Watt, Harry Thursz, Iona Riley, Liam Fairbairn, Alexander Doctor and Kieran Binning.  They have all participated in a huge range of clubs and activities, as part of their wider learning achievements.

The pupils were presented with their certificates by our Higher Education learning partners, Mary De la Pena MBE, Chief Executive of Children's University, Scotland, and by Callum Maguire, Queen Margaret University.  It is hoped that a graduation ceremony, in 'Harry Potteresque' hoods & gowns,  for silver and gold awards, will happen next session at Queen Margaret University.  Well done to all participants and Happy Easter.
