Schools in East Lothian have been offered an amazing opportunity to create maths calculations that will feature on flags at the Scottish Open in Gullane and seen by viewers all over the world!

Click here for the competition outline and details for entering.

Background
Numeracy and mathematics are core to education and skills development across all aspects of learning and teaching.  The Making Maths Count report was published by the Scottish Government in September 2016 and sets out a range of recommendations that aim to raise awareness of, and confidence and attainment in, maths and promote its value and relevance to education, life and work.  One of its key recommendations was to create positive initiatives and partnerships that promote maths in real-life, fun and relevant ways.  You can access the report here.

Aberdeen Standard Investments, together with the Scottish Government, East Lothian Council, The European Tour and VisitScotland, have developed an initiative to help encourage greater enthusiasm for maths amongst the country’s children – by running a competition across East Lothian schools to print mathematical calculations that will feature on the 18 pin flags at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Men’s and Ladies Scottish Opens in July 2018.

Tempest Photography will be coming into school on Thursday 26 April 2018 to take a whole school photograph. This photograph only takes place every 7 years to allow every year group to have the opportunity to be part of it.

These photographs are always a good keepsake, marking the years of secondary school. Information about how to purchase the photographs, if you should wish to do so, will be sent home in due course.

Pupils should be dressed smartly, in full school dress code for this event. Senior pupils should be in their blazers and ties. All pupils should be wearing a white shirt, tie and all black trousers or skirts and shoes.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.

The consultation on the Draft Local Transport Strategy (LTS) and associated documents is now live on the Council's Consultation Hub covering the period from 2018 to 2024. The LTS outlines a range of problems and issues affecting Transport in East Lothian and what actions and measures it proposes to deal with these issues. The draft Strategy reflects the key role of transport and outlines plans for ongoing development taking into account the wider changes in East Lothian as detailed in the Local Development Plan.

As well as the main draft LTS, there are a number of associated Plans which will deliver specific aspects of the overall Strategy - these are:

  • The Road Asset Management Plan
  • The Road Safety Plan
  • The Active Travel Improvement Plan
  • The Parking Management Strategy

We want to gather views on the draft Local Transport Strategy (and associated Plans). You can share your views on the East Lothian Consultations website. The draft LTS, associated Plans and SEA Environmental Report are available for inspection from Tuesday 3 April to Friday 11 May 2018. They can be viewed at all libraries and principal offices in East Lothian at John Muir House, Haddington and Brunton Hall, Musselburgh as well as the online consultation.
