IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR THURSDAY.

This Thursday (3 October 2019) 1L1, 1L2 and half of 1T1 will be going to to Edinburgh College.  Make sure you check with your register teacher that you are on the list for this Thursday.

All you will need on Thursday is a warm, waterproof jacket and a packed lunch. You should be in full dress code. If you normally get a school lunch then go to the food court BEFORE registration and choose a lunch.  Mention to the ladies that you are going on the S1 trip.

As soon as you register go to the food court and meet with Mr Taylor.

We have 20 spaces at a the Digital Explorers event on Monday 7 October 2019 for any interested pupils in S1-S3.

There will be sessions on:

  • Coding: On the day you will get a chance to code your own robot using coloured patterns and learn about how AI can be used to help people by getting an Ozobot to perform a special task.
  • Coding Communications: what is coding? How do computers understand us and speak to one another? Learn about the origins of coding by making and cracking your own codes.
  • Meet a Mentor: tech sounds fun, but who actually works in tech? What kinds of jobs do they do, and how did they get there? Our special guests will answer all of your burning questions.
  • STEM Den: we use tech all the time in our daily lives- now it’s time to go from consumer to creator. How would you use tech to change the world? Design and pitch your innovative ideas.

A school swimming gala is due to take place on Thursday 7 November 2019 at the Mercat Gait Centre in Prestonpans. We are looking for S1-S6 pupils to represent the school in distances of 50m (and also a 100m IM). If you are a club swimmer, or a component recreational swimmer please come to PE (small gym) at lunch time on Tuesday 1st October at 1.30pm for more information.

The next Social Enterprise Network Meeting takes place on Friday 4th October at Wee Red Upcycles CIC, 9–12 Church Street, Haddington, starting at 8.30 am with refreshments and networking, followed by various speakers from local Social Enterprises. A group of S6 pupils are running the School Magazine this session and we are hoping to publish our first edition in December 2019. We are looking for articles from pupils. Subjects include any current topics eg Climate Change and creative work eg poems and short stories. The String Orchestra will restart on Friday 27 September 2019  from 12.15 pm - 1.00 pm. It will meet in Mrs Martin's music room.

If anyone has lessons outside school on violin, viola or cello and would like to play in the orchestra please come and see Miss Turbayne in the Music Department on Wednesday or Friday morning.

There will be a study support session in Geography tomorrow, Wednesday 25th, after school from 3:30pm.  There are multiple pupils who would benefit from attending this session!  Please come along!

The session will focus on:

  • The formation of river features (e.g. Waterfalls);
  • Population distribution; &
  • Reasons for different Birth Rates and Death Rates

Though if you have anything else you would like to go over please come along!

Halloween Dance tickets will be available to buy from THURSDAY break time in the social area.  Tickets will be sold in 'Houses' - so there will be 3 desks to buy tickets from (Garleton, Lammerlaw and Traprain).  The dance is on Wednesday 30th October and tickets are £3.

The Earth Science Week photo competition

This year’s photo competition is celebrating the theme by inviting images of the geology all around us from anywhere in the world. Send us pictures of geology where you live, a favourite holiday destination, a place you’ve studied or worked at, or somewhere that inspires you! Whatever you choose, please submit your photographs with a few lines about the subject of your image and/or what the site means to you.

Prizes

As well as being displayed at the Geological Society, winning photographs will all feature in our 2020 calendar, with full credit. In addition, first, second and third prizes will be awarded:

1st prize: £100
2nd prize: £50
3rd prize: £25

Please make yourself familiar with the 'GOING THE EXTRA MILE' board now in PE. This is to recognise YOUR achievements through sport and physical activity, from extra-curricular clubs to international level. We want to encourage you to celebrate your success and share it with staff, and other pupils at Knox Academy. This will be updated monthly.

In order to feature on our ‘Going the Extra Mile’ board, please follow the below steps:

Nominate yourself. You can do this in person by coming to the PE department during the month or emailing a member of the PE department via your school EDUBUZZ account.

Nominate someone else.  If you are a pupil or staff member, you can also do this in person by coming to the PE department, or emailing a member of the PE department via your school EDUBUZZ account.

Alongside your nomination please give a very short reason as to why you are completing the nomination, for yourself, or others!

We will require a photo, this can be an action shot or a head shot (which we can take for you) that will be displayed.  We look forward to filling our ‘Going the Extra Mile’ board for the month of September!
