Rehearsals are underway for our S1 Christmas Choir 2023.

The entire S1 will be performing at the Matinee Christmas Concert on Thursday 21st December at 2pm

You will be practising every music lesson until the concert. Please use the content posted on your Google Classrooms to practise.

We will also have guests from local Nursing Homes and p7s from local Primary Schools.

Full school uniform must be worn please. Tinsel & Santa hats welcome!

The flyer below will be sent to all your parents/carers and each student will receive a free ticket for them to watch your performance.

These will be given out in Music class - please check your parent/carer can make it before taking a ticket. Any leftover will be given out on a first come first served basis.

The Senior Christmas Dance will be taking place on Wednesday 13th December from 7pm-9.30pm.

Tickets are now available to purchase through SchoolPay.  They are £3 and can be accessed here. If you wish to attend and are eligible, please purchase tickets before the end of day on Monday 11th December.

There will be a rehearsal after school on FRIDAY 1 DECEMBER 2023 from 12:15 - 1:15pm for everyone involved in Knox Voices including soloists and singers from Junior Choir and Staff/Senior Choir. We will be rehearsing 'What About Us?' for the Christmas Concert on Thursday 21st December.

This will be in addition to the weekly rehearsals:

Christmas Concert tickets will be going on sale in the Music Department at Break from 1st December 2023.

From the 27th November your Careers Adviser (Chris Trotter) will invite you for 10-15 minute chat about your subject choices for S3.

  • There are lots of things to consider when choosing subjects. Jobs and careers are just one thing to think about. 
  • Don't worry if you don't know what you want to do when you leave school. There is lots of time and support for you over the next few years to help you decide. 
  • Chris will also be coming to your PSE classes to give you some more information and give you some things to think about before you see him.
  • Just to clarify, you will not be choosing subject when you see him.  This is just an initial discussion to kick-start the process.
  • You will be getting a lot more information from school and you won't have to decide until later in Feb 24.

There will an assembly on exam preparation/ revision support during period 2 today (Thursday 23rd November), led by the pupil leadership team. We will cover how best to structure your revision, different methods to try for each subject and general tips on exam technique. We hope this will be useful with prelims coming up, so you can do the best you can!

Please register with your core period teacher before coming down to the hall.

In order to celebrate Children In Need Day this Friday, we will be having a whole school dress down day, with each pupil being encouraged to donate £1 to dress down. All S6s will be wearing fancy dress and have collection buckets throughout the day. Remember to look out for us during registration and your period 1 classes when we tour the school to make your donations!

We will also be running fundraising events during breaktime on Friday. This will be an extended break to give everybody more time to get involved as much as they can. The activities will be 50p + and include:

  • Children In Need Bake Sale
  • 'Sponge the Teacher’
  • 'Pin the bandana on Pudsey’ (prizes up for grabs!)

Feel free to support the SPOTacular theme as well and wear something spotty!

We are rehearsing What About Us?  - a song about social justice - for the Christmas Concert and are hoping for lots of staff and seniors to join in so we can put on a great performance!

All pupils attending the French film screening trip this Wednesday 15 November 2023 should go to periods 1-3 as normal and then meet at Ms Fletcher's classroom (T1.1) promptly at the end of break (11.25am). Please ensure you bring a packed lunch and your Young Scot card. Please remember we will return to school at roughly 3.35pm, which means that pupils who rely on school buses will have to make alternative travel arrangements to get home. 

Pupils are expected to catch up on any school work missed during this day trip. Merci!

Thank you to those of you who have been making regular payments for the S3 PGL Trip 2024. This message is to give you a reminder of all of the payment deadlines :

Payment schedules will run between the following dates : 

30/06/23 (£30), 31/08/23 (£36), 30/08/23 (£36), 31/10/23 (£33), 30/11/23 (£33), 

31/01/24 (£33), 29/02/24 (£33), 31/03/24 (£33), 30/04/24 (£33).

These must be adhered to in order to support the viability of a trip. If you have paid nothing or only the deposit and we have heard nothing from you by the 1st of December we will assume this is because your young person no longer wishes to attend the PGL trip. 

We are unable to adjust numbers following this date with PGL therefore it is important that we have final numbers by then. Those families who have applied for financial support, we are aware of this and we have yet to have a response from the East Lothian Education Trust. However, please be assured we will support you. If anyone else would like to apply for financial support please don't hesitate to speak to Mrs McBride.

The PE Department will be closed to normal timetabled classes all day on TUESDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2023.  This is for the S4-S6 certificated PE practical assessments.

If you have a PE class on this day be prepared to go elsewhere in the building.  The information about where your class is being sent will be on the whiteboard in the PE Corridor.

Next week is Scottish Book Week! To celebrate, we will be doing two things here at Knox. On Tuesday the 14 November 2023, everyone will have the opportunity to read for 10 minutes at the start of every (yes, EVERY) lesson! So remember to bring in a book that you are currently reading. On Wednesday the 15 November 2023, we will be holding a Book Swap event in the hall where you will get to swap a book for a new (to you, at least) book! You can bring your book(s) to the English department any time leading up to the Book Swap. Lil - Haddington's plastic-free refill shop - is hosting its annual Re-Use Festival at Knox Academy this year.

It's an event where anyone in the community can get top quality gifts, clothes, homewares, toys, books, and more at a very low cost. The idea is to promote second-hand shopping because it’s better for our pockets and the planet too. Help us make secondhand everyone’s first choice by donating, attending and spreading the word. Pupils involved in certificated PE at all levels are involved in the first of 2 practical performance assessments on Tuesday 14th November.

Pupils will be out of class on a rotation basis and will not be absent from classes all day.  

Schedule of pupils being assessed and times they will be out of class will be sent to all staff - so teachers will know when you should be back in their classes.

Pupils can double check their assessment time with their PE teacher and on the notice board in the PE department.  DO NOT miss your designated assessment time as you are unlikely to get another chance.

This year the S6 pupils are keen to get a big house competition up and running.  Garleton vs Lammerlaw vs Traprain - who will be the best?  The start of this great battle is being held this week at lunchtimes with a dodgeball tournament in PE (1.15pm start).

Carousel Training Centre  offer Modern Apprenticeships to individuals who are passionate about working in the Early Learning and Childcare Industry.

An apprentice would be employed by a local Private Nursery or Out of School Club and would be responsible for delivering a quality program of activities for children aged 0-5 or 5-11, which develops their physical, intellectual, language and social skills in partnership with parents and qualified staff.

The Apprentice would be trained on the job to SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) SCQF Level 7.

Residential Insight into University 2024 courses is now open.  

Residential Insight into University courses are Industrial Cadets accredited summer schools which can help you decide which degree course might be right for you and also enhance your UCAS application. Courses run over 4 or 5 days where Yr12/S5-6 students get a taster of university life and an insight into a specific STEM subject. Please see below the list of courses available for 2024, with some dates still to be confirmed:  

  • Materials Science at the University of Oxford, 17th June – 21st June 2024 - 4 nights residential
  • Materials Science at the University of Cambridge, 30th June – 4th July - 4 nights residential
  • Broad based Engineering at the University of Sheffield - 4 nights residential
  • Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool - 4 nights residential
  • Maths at Lancaster University, 29th July – 1st August 2024 - 3 nights residential
  • Mechanical Engineering at UCL - 3 nights residential

In this week's STEM club session, our juniors finished their spaghetti structures and tested their ability to withstand an 'earthquake'! Prizes were awarded to the groups who had the longest-lasting and the best architectural designs (the secret is to include triangles!) - and their winning designs are pictured are below. Well done to everybody who took part and came up with so many interesting ideas - we'll see you all next week for our next project!

STAFF/SENIOR CHOIR will launch on Wednesday 1 November 2023!!

We will rehearse in the Music Department every Wednesday lunchtime in Mrs Middlemiss's room. This is open to every member of staff (including teachers, learning support, janitors, admin, catering etc) and students in S4-6.

Students studying voice for their SQA Music course or performing as a singer in GREASE are strongly encouraged to attend.

We will be learning the song 'What About Us?' by PINK  and will be joining forces with Junior Choir to become Knox Voices for the Christmas Concert 2023.

We will sing from 1:20 - 1:40pm (You are very welcome to eat your lunch in my room before choir starts)
