What is it?
This is a week in the Knox Academy calendar where the pupils in S1-S3 get the opportunity to participate in activities that perhaps a normal class environment may inhibit. The activities on offer during the week can enhance a pupils education in many of the subjects they face on a day to day basis and for this reason we think it is very important that every pupil gets this experience.
Why do we do it?
One of the main aims of the week is to promote Citizenship, through being out of school in mixed groups, meeting a variety of people and undertaking both group and individual tasks.
The aim of Citizenship education is 'To work with parents, to teach pupils respect for self and one another and their interdependence with other members of their neighbourhood and society and to teach them the duties and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society'. (Scottish Government).
Although for S2 and S3 pupils residential trips are also on offer, this week is not a holiday! In fact the majority of the trips are run for pupils following specific certificated courses. The opportunities and activities we offer during this time are unlike anything your child will experience as part of a 'family break' and very often the pupils develop the social and confidence skills they will require in later life.
Does my child have to take part?
All pupils from S1-S3 are expected to take part as this is a normal school week and therefore part of your child's education. However, it is also an opportunity to have fun and still learn with teachers in a more relaxed setting. We do offer support for families who can not afford the full expense of this week - please contact Mrs Ingham (Head Teacher) in writing if this applies to you.
