In 2014, we all have an important decision to make: should we vote for Scotland to become independent?

On Thursday two brave teachers, Mr Illingworth and Mr Redford, went head to head and debated this question in front of a huge and very enthusiastic audience of pupils and staff.  I'm sure everyone who attended would agree that the quality of the debate was excellent and the questions from the pupils were thoughtful, mature and showed that teenagers are engaged in politics and are intellectually curious.  It was very impressive and encouraging to see such a massive turnout from pupils across all age groups.

Pupils from six East Lothian secondary schools who achieved top marks in their Highers were celebrated at a special prize giving held at Queen Margaret University.

On Monday 12 November, eight pupils from Ross High, North Berwick High, Musselburgh Grammar, Knox Academy, and Dunbar Grammar who attained the best overall performance in Higher Health Food Technology and Higher Business Management, were praised and rewarded for their achievements.

Former S6 pupil, Jenni McBirnie achieved the top mark in Higher Business Management at Knox Academy for Session 2011-2012.

"Should Scotland become independent?"

Mr Illingworth and Mr Redford will be taking part in a debate on Thursday 22 November (1.25 pm in the library) on the question of Scottish Independence.  It's going to  be fairly informal with opening speeches then questions/comments from the floor with an opportunity for the speakers to respond. 

The idea is to raise the profile of debating, a great format for challenging our pupils to think independently, and encouraging pupils to talk about the independence question.

Following the continued success of our event last session, Knox Academy Business Question Time will take place on Wednesday 21 November at 2 pm in the Main Hall.  This is part of the curriculum for Higher and Advanced Higher Business Management classes. 

The panellists this year will include John McMillan, Councillor for Tourism and Economic Development; Mike Hoppe, Owner of Subway, Haddington; Hilary Dickson, Owner of Hilary’s Deli, Haddington; Alistair Bryce, Business Start-up Advisor at East Lothian Council; Linda De Costa, Administrator at the National Museum of Flight, East Fortune; Gary Blackwood, Doctor at Wight Chiropractic Clinic, Haddington; Paul Kinnock, Owner of Waterloo Bistro, Haddington and Aberlady Inn; and, Neil Fraser, Director of Ebusiness UK.
