We have had a few visitors to Meadowpark in the last two weeks which is always a good opportunity not only to increase my daily steps which are often well above the recommended 10,000 steps, but to walk round the school and see it through the eyes of our visitors. Of course I spot the hole in the wall, the scuffed paintwork, the general wear and tear that comes from having 18 young people passing through the building daily, and of course I don’t draw attention to this but focus on the positives: the space we have, the flexibility of using that space, the light that pours in from the high windows and the ample outdoor space. Mail for Meadowpark often goes AWOL, sometimes it arrives at Knox Academy, sometimes John Muir House, often at Haddington Infants or King’s Meadow and on occasion it actually makes its way to us. The addressee can be anything from Mr. Charli Prime, The Manager or even Head Teacher (I like that one) but not often is it addressed to a member of the Knox Academy administration team. However, such was the case on Monday when the letter intended for Meadowpark eventually made its way to me. I was amazed and delighted to open the letter and inside spied a cheque. I am so glad that we still use cheques – there is something special about seeing the pale blue background. I read the accompanying letter and looked again at the cheque which was for £198.47. Storm Ali certainly ruffled a few feathers here this week – and I don’t just mean our feathered friends who inhabit the surrounding trees. The old adage that high winds affect children and animals is true and especially for young people who are often at the mercy of their sensory perceptions. The wind howled through the trees with such ferocity that it was only correct that we heeded the warnings and kept our young people safe indoors. Fortunately we have a flexible space and so the common room, soft play, gym and food court were all able to be fully utilised. Read more here... Meadowpark newsletter 21.09.18

It has felt quite autumnal this week and rain definitely stopped everybody participating in outdoor play on two occasions, although a few hardy stalwarts kept going on the swings under the shelter. Fortunately we have a number of spaces that can be used flexibly and so pupils were able to let off steam in the gym or soft play room or ‘coorie in’ with a book or board game in the common room. We encourage pupils not to use electronic devices at these times but instead to participate in social activities which help to foster resilience, negotiation and fun. read more here ...Meadowpark newsletter 07.09.18
