Now that we are well under way with the autumn term it is reassuring to observe pupils in Meadowpark using our environment pertaining to their needs. Tyre Island continues to be a magnetic draw for moments as diverse as exhilaration as well as for contemplation. The ‘bouy’ swing under the shelter has become a necessary and sensory focus for reducing anxiety for a young person who recently moved from Romania. We are all gleaning a little of what life has been like for one of our new pupils and recognise that his need to flee is because he can and be safe within our environment. He has a clear exit strategy and is beginning to accept that certain boundaries are in place not to restrict or inhibit him but to keep him safe. Read more here... Meadowpark Newsletter (Week 3).

It’s often said at the start of a new term ‘It doesn’t feel as if we’ve ever been away” but this year we have all benefited from the extraordinarily hot, dry summer holiday we have had. Pupils are eager to learn and genuinely refreshed.

Both are south facing and so will get a lot of natural light, and the new windows will help with noise reduction and insulation in winter. We have also opted for carpet on the floors in place of linoleum, and the use of the sound proofing system has been so effective in the original classes that this has been installed as a matter of course. Contractors are not quite finished and so the two classes remain out of bounds, but to know that the rear corridor is insulated, warm, and attractive has generated a greater sense of ownership for all. Well we have made it to the end of term and thank goodness for the extraordinarily good weather we have had this week. This week temperatures reached 26’-28’ and all young people have had lots of planned opportunities to be outside learning numeracy, literacy and health and well-being through experiential learning – measuring, predicting, counting, observing, talking and listening. Our young people have also been advised on how to self-regulate in the heat as many do not recognise when they are over-heating and we have had to be quite insistent on removing heavy black jumpers and sweatshirts, encouraging pupils to play, read, and cool down under the  shelter and ensuring that they are all drinking plenty of fluids. Thank you to families, colleagues and agencies who supported our Open Day on Monday 18th June. Tyne class produced some delicious chocolate cupcakes which were much appreciated and the school felt somehow different with all the doors open and a gentle murmur of chat with the ebb and flow of visitors.
