S1 Day Trips

Information for Activities Week: S1 Day Trips 2015

During the week beginning 12th January S1 pupils were given the  details of the activities arranged for them during the week.  The letter that was issued to them to take home can be downloaded here.

A consent form will need to be completed before your son/daughter can go on any of the trips.  If you need a replacement please download one here.

The forms and a deposit of £20.00 are due on or before Friday 30th January.  Forms can be placed in the box at reception but any payment of money must be given directly to a member of the office staff and accompanied by the pupil's payment card.  Although payments can be handed in at any time I would be grateful if you tried to make your payments on a Tuesday and Thursday morning.  A member of the office staff will sit close to reception and collect money from pupils.

About the Trips

During week commencing 25 May 2015, a programme of activities and trips will run in place of the normal timetable. This programme has been arranged to give pupils experience of a broad range of practical/outdoor activities based around several curricular themes including Enterprise, Science, History and Outdoor Education.

The programme of events has now been confirmed.

From Monday 25th May until Thursday 28th May S1 pupils will take part in a rotation of the following four events:

One of the main aims of the week is to promote Citizenship, through being out of school in mixed groups, meeting a variety of people and undertaking both group and individual tasks.

What To Expect

To prepare yourself for each day of Activities Week here is a little about what you will do on each day.  Please make sure you have a packed lunch with you each day that you are out of school.

Bonaly Outdoor Centre - No Dress Code Required

This in the only day of the week you do not need to be in School Dress Code.  In fact make sure you have warm clothing with you that is waterproof.  You will be outside for most of the day even if there is light rain.  Five years ago there was even sleet falling for part of the morning.  A hat and gloves are sensible too.  Of course we may get good weather too so keep your eye on the weather forecast and bring sun cream and plenty water if it is going to be hot.  Strong, well supporting, shoes are important whatever the weather as you will be walking on grass, muddy paths and even climbing!

When you are at Bonaly you will be split into small groups taking part in a rota of four activities.  The four activities are:

  • Archery
  • Climbing
  • Orienteering
  • Problem Solving

You will not be forced to do the climbing if you don't like the look of it but you are advised to give it a go.  The Bonaly staff will have you strapped into a harness so you will be very safe.  Many people return from the Bonaly trip amazed at what they have done and wanting to go back.

Blair Drummond Safari Park - Dress Code Required

A programme of activities has been organised at the Safari Park for you including:

  • A Touch Table
  • Sea Lion Show
  • Bird of prey show
  • Trip round Chimp Island
  • Free time to explore the park

Our Dynamic Earth and The National Museum of Scotland - Dress Code Required

This trip to two different venues will start off at "Our Dynamic Earth" with a tour of the main galleries.  You will then visit the Showdome to see the featured film followed by a workshop called "Natural Disasters".  You will eat lunch at Dynamic Earth and then walk up tothe National Museum of Scotland.

At the National Museum you will have time to tour around the Natural World Galleries finding out about such things as the evolution of animals and you can explore the lives of animals from around the world, from the Arctic to Australia, and even see how you measure up – do you weigh more than a chimpanzee?

Enterprise Event

The fourth full day of Activities Week is a school based event focused on enterprise.  You will be involved in the design, manufacture and advertising of a product.  You will work in small groups and there will be awards presented at the end by guest judges that are invited into the school.

Friday - The Final Day

On Friday the 29th May you will get the opportunity to find out what the S2 and S3 have been doing.  They will be presenting to you, showing you what activities they have been involved in throughout the week.  This will hopefully give you inspiration for next year where you will get the chance to choose the activities that you are involved in.

Keep checking the website and listen in registration for any new notices.

UPDATE

The group lists will go up in the Food Court this week.

Pupil information will be put up in registration classrooms and the food court so pupils should know exactly where to go and what to bring each day. Your own copy of the information sheet can be downloaded here.

Best wishes to all in what I hope will be a very enjoyable and full week.
