IT'S ALL KICKING OFF AT KNOX

Last week saw extra-curricular activities start for 2012/13 at Knox Academy, with many of our pupils choosing to attend one or several of the clubs on offer at the school. Once again we look for help from parents/carers in encouraging pupils to become involved in extra-curricular sport and activity as a means of contributing towards a healthy and active lifestyle. In particular I would like to encourage pupils to try the Table Tennis and Racketwall clubs, especially those pupils not involved in any other type of school sport. Para

Today, Ms Easson requested that we look at "para," and mentioned a few "para" - related words.

Interestingly, the prefix "para" comes from Greek origins, meaning "beside."  This gives us "parallel," and "parabola."

But, "para" also has French origins, meaning "protection against."  In this way we have "parachute" - protection against "chute" (a fall).  Similarily, there is "parasol," which breaks down into protection against "sole" (the sun).

"Paralympics" is a portmanteau word, blending "paraplegic" and "Olympics."  It comes from the 1950s. Read more about Para

31 August 2012

It’s been a week of watching, listening and learning for me.  I started by visiting the S1 pupils in the Communication and Literacy Faculty.  I visited a couple of French classes and thanks to a memory game in one I now know my “feutre” from my “stylo” and my “bic”.  Thanks to my table who made me feel welcome and Mollie in particular for marking my listening test.  I then made my way to some English classes where I heard pupils talk about what was important to them (I shall be going back to hear the rest of Mr Halliday’s talk on Karate) and I got to read a chapter of “The Recruit” with Mr Read more about 31 August 2012

SCHOOL SESSION DATES 2013-2014 CONSULTATION

People’s views are being sought on East Lothian Council term dates and holidays for the academic year 2013/14

A consultation is underway into two alternative options because the ability of all Lothian councils to set the same holidays will not be possible.

The Department of Services for People each year carry out a consultation on the draft school session dates.  Following the consultation exercise the views submitted are taken into account and a report based on the consultation exercise is submitted to Council Committee for Education for approval.
