Dominie

In chapter 1 of Kidnapped, by Robert Louis Stevenson (and our Big Read!), we learn that the hero's father was a "dominie," that "no man more plausibly conducted school."

"Dominie" is a Scots word for teacher (or sometimes, a student at university).  It was used a little in England, but was used widely in Scotland.  The word comes from the Latin "dominus" meaning "master."  There is an obvious link here with schoolmaster.  The Latin word could also mean "head of the household."  Other common words coming from this root are "dominant," "domineering,"etc. Read more about Dominie

LITERACY NEWS: THE BIG READ

By the end of this week, each of our S1 pupils will have been issued with a copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Kidnapped. Reading this novel will be the main focus of their learning in English this half term.

Why not join us? We shall keep you up to date with our journey through the book, and what we are learning. This week - the first couple of chapters, and our hero's great expectations...

Look out for after school reading groups on Kidnapped over the next few weeks. It would be great to hear your views...
