Interviews for the permanent teacher at Meadowpark take place on Monday.

Assemblies

There will be no assemblies for the next few weeks as prelims are taking place in the main hall.

PTA – Hamper donations

We’re putting together festive hampers for the S1 Christmas Fayre raffle. If you’re able to donate an item, we’d be so grateful. Thank for supporting our school community! Please hand in any donations to Ms Borwick in the PE Department by no later than Monday. Thank you in advance for your support!

Rights Respecting Schools (RRSA)

This week’s right of the week is Article 14: Freedom of Thought and Religion.

About Children's Rights - 14.Freedom of thought and religion

Children can choose their own thoughts, opinions and religion, but this should not stop other people from enjoying their rights.  Parents can guide children so that as they grow up, they learn to properly use this right.

Our RRSA and Equity Committees are holding a luxury raffle for Christmas.  The money they raise will be split between Lammermuir Larder and a Christmas gift drive.  There are some amazing prizes up for grabs including a huge hamper full of goodies, and lots of vouchers for our lovely local businesses.  You could also win a 2-night stay in a luxury cabin in Pencaitland (worth over £200!).  Tickets cost £5 for the standard raffle, and £10 for the 2-night stay and can be bought from the school office with cash.  The raffle will be drawn on Friday 12th December.  Any donations for prizes are more than welcome and can be dropped off at the office or brought in by our young people.

There is also an ongoing competition between registration groups to see which class can collect the most donations for Lammermuir Larder.  The top three classes earn house points and the top class gets a great reward (did someone say pizza party?).  The competition runs until Friday 12th December so please make sure to send in as many non-perishable items as you can spare, (By Chloe McNeill, Maths)

Meadowpark Reading Group

This week, the Meadowpark Reading Leadership Group visited Haddington Day Centre to read with the people who use the centre.

The pupils really enjoyed talking to the service users about the books they read when they were younger. It was interesting to learn that many of the books they loved are still read today!

A special well done goes to Alfie and Frankie from Corran, who represented Meadowpark exceptionally well. Everyone is very proud of them.

This successful visit is part of the work we are doing to achieve the Gold Reading Schools Award, which is going very well.

S3 – Teen Booster

All young people in S3 are offered the Teen Booster MenACWY and DTP vaccines on 26th and 27th January at Meadowpark and Knox Academy, which protect against meningitis, diphtheria, tetanus and polio. These vaccines are given as an injection in the upper arm and provide longer-term protection against these serious and, in some cases, life-threatening diseases.

Young people who are eligible should bring a consent pack home from school this week.

NHS Scotland encourages parents/carers and young people to chat about the vaccines using the enclosed information leaflet, before signing and returning their consent form to school in the envelope provided by Friday 19th December.

If your child is currently absent from school, they can collect their consent pack at registration on their return.  If they did not receive a consent pack and were present at school, please ask them to speak to Alison Swallow, School Welfare Assistant.

Please visit nhs inform for further information, including videos about why vaccines are offered to young people and what to expect at the vaccination session.

Career Ready

The launch of Career Ready is this Friday, in Edinburgh. We have four (S5) young people who are embarking on this programme and will have a mentor from a business. They will also do an internship during the summer as part of this programme.  This is an absolutely great experience for them and helps develop both their skills and confidence. A huge thank you  to Mrs Ferguson who leads on this.

Interior Design Industry Link

The S3 Graphics class visited TANGRAM, an interior Design Studio in Edinburgh last term and over a few weeks, learners (individually or in groups), developed an Interior Design project to a brief set by TANGRAM. Tangram staff then came to school and gave feedback on the projects after presentations.

Learners developed their skills for work and got to see what a future career in Interior Design/Graphics would look like through this project based learning.

Health Information for All

Norovirus outbreaks can happen at any time of year but are more prevalent during the winter months. Cases usually start to appear during the autumn, peaking during January. The symptoms usually last for 12 to 60 hours and often start with the sudden onset of nausea followed by projectile vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Norovirus is very infectious, and it takes a very small amount of the virus to cause ongoing spread. You catch it if small particles of vomit or faeces from an infected person get into your mouth such as through · close contact with someone with norovirus – they may breathe out small particles containing the virus that you could inhale · touching contaminated surfaces or objects – the virus can survive outside the body for several days · eating contaminated food – this can happen if an infected person doesn't wash their hands before handling food We would like to remind you of the importance of being prepared and vigilant for norovirus outbreaks as prompt action prevents spread of the virus and reduces the number of people becoming ill.

Respiratory infections Like Noroviruses, respiratory infections tend to occur in the winter months, most commonly from Autumn to Spring. All respiratory viruses generally present with similar symptoms such as runny nose, cough, fever.

Vital infection control measures for the initial management of an outbreak include: -

1. Thorough hand washing is the simplest and most important infection control measure. Washing hands thoroughly using soap and water will help prevent the spread of common infections such as colds, flu, covid19 and stomach bugs. Hands should be washed throughout the day i.e. before and after eating, using the toilet, after coughing and sneezing and when returning from breaks. Children need to understand why it is important to wash their hands; be taught how to wash, rinse and dry their hands correctly, and have easy access to running water and soap.

2. Environmental & Equipment cleaning: Robust environmental cleaning immediately after any contamination by diarrhoea or vomit is vital to contain the spread of the virus. The frequency of toilet cleaning and frequently touched surfaces e.g. toilet flushes, door handles and tap heads should be increased.

3. Prompt exclusion:  Children and staff with diarrhoea and/or vomiting should remain off until they have been symptom free for 48 hours. Affected children should be isolated from their classmates until collected by their parents/carer. For respiratory infections staff and children should stay at home if they have a high temperature and do not feel well enough to go to school and carry out normal duties. They should stay at home until they no longer have a high temperature or until they feel better.

For more information please refer to the NHS.

Assemblies

There were no assemblies this week but next week’s assemblies will be with S4-S6 on Prelim Preparation and House Group assemblies on anti-bullying.

Parents’ Evening S4/5/6

It was great to see so many parents/carers and senior pupils along at the first of two senior school parents’ evenings. Those I spoke with had found the feedback from teachers really useful at this stage and just before prelims. The second of our S4/5/6 Parents’ Evening is this Tuesday, 11 November. We hope to see as many parents/carers there as possible and if you were unable to make Thursday’s one.

If you are unable to make either evening for any reason, please do contact the House Team so we can get some feedback for you on your young person’s performance.

Learning Support Update

We will be pausing our input with the S1 and 2 literacy groups during the senior phase prelims in order to target support to our S4-6 young people.

We will finish up on the 14 November with all groups and start back again on the 8 December.  Our intention is that the week beginning the 8 December will be an assessment week to measure whether these interventions are beginning to have an impact.

We hope to inform all parents and carers of their progress in the New Year.

Achievement Ties –

Achievement Ties nominations close on Friday 21 November 2025.

Safety

Meadowpark (road)

I have received numerous complaints from Meadowpark residents about dangerous driving in this street. They report driving on the pavement (there is a nursery there); parking on the double yellow lines or double parking and also drive down the road at speed. They have also reported damage to their vehicles. If you do use this road to drop off young people or pick them up, please be mindful of these concerns and follow correct procedures as a road user. We want to keep everyone safe and happy in our community. Thank you.

Trips/visits/events

Careers Hive National Museum of Scotland STEM trip

On Thursday the 30 October a group of 20 S3 pupils visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to take part in the ‘Careers Hive Roadshow’ event.

The session consisted of four themed zones containing hands-on activities for pupils to explore, each covering different areas of STEM careers and hosted by volunteer STEM professionals. Central to these zones is the Think Tank, a dedicated space for pupils to informally chat one-on-one with STEM professionals and ask the questions that matter to them most.

Accompanied by Miss Campbell, pupils then had the opportunity to get hands-on with a range of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) activities and attend an interactive panel discussion with early career STEM professionals from a range of industries who talk about their career journey, from the traditional to the unconventional, and answer pupils’ questions.

As S3 reach the point in their education where they may consider their future career path, Careers Hive works to showcase that STEM skills are transferable and further studying STEM subjects will help their future careers in a wide range of sectors.

An incredibly successful and worthwhile experience for our young people!

‘‘I really enjoyed this trip. I loved that we got to choose from all the activities. We had time to venture around the museum and it really helped clear some fog out of the way of my career choices. I now realise I don’t have to have a straight path to the job I’m going to end up doing.’’ (Charlotte Webster)

‘’I found the school trip really fun and it was great to go out somewhere to learn. I talked to different people about their jobs and how they got there.’’ (Ivy Phoenix-Hill)

‘’As someone who is more creative, I now know that there are several STEM jobs where I could use my skills.’’ (Delilah Brady)

‘’I found the trip interesting and fun! It was super cool to learn about all the different STEM jobs. I feel more confident talking about career paths after the trip.’’ (Luka Togher)

Veterans’ Coffee Morning

It was lovely to welcome our local war veterans, on Thursday, for tea and cake. Our seniors enjoyed speaking to those who came along and hearing their stories about serving in WW1 and WW2 and asking them about their medals. Our Head Pupils and Mr Flood are also laying a wreath at the war memorial this Sunday, at St Mary’s Church, on behalf of our school.

Pupils’ Successes

Athletics

Congratulations to David Hunter who won the U18s men’s 60m last weekend at the Scottish Athletics Indoor League at the Emirates stadium. As well as winning he did so in a new personal best time of

7.39 seconds! That is fast!

Knight Fever Dance Competition Group

A huge well done to a group of talented Knox Academy students who are part of the Knight Fever Dance competition team. These dedicated dancers (Poppy Jones, Lucy Hamilton (both S3); Olivia Davidson, Holly Bain, Erin Marshall. Amy Christie (all S2); Macie Thompson, Lacey Archibald, Isla Redpath, Rosie Chapman (all S1) and Jessie Smillie and Niamh Paterson (both S4)) train for over 8 hours a week and many also volunteer their time to support younger students in classes. Their commitment, energy, and teamwork are truly inspiring.

Last weekend, the team competed at Meadowbank, bringing home multiple trophies, and they’re back on the competition floor again this Sunday in Wishaw. On top of that, several of the girls are also preparing for ballet exams — all while keeping up with their schoolwork!

We are incredibly proud of their achievements and the way they represent Knox Academy with such passion and perseverance. Keep dancing, girls — you’re amazing!

Ice-hockey

Congratulations also goes to Harry Hudson (S3) who is one of only five Scottish boys to be selected for the Elite British Selects to take part in the CCM world invites tournament in Chicago. We wish him all these best!

If you would like to tell us about your young people’s achievements please send an email to admin@knox.elcschool.org.uk and put Achievements in the subject header. It’s always great to hear from you and to spread the word widely about our talented pupils.
