PT Guidance (Pupil Support Leader) - Interviews took place on Monday and our preferred candidate, based on pre-employment checks, is Iona Holmes. It is hoped she will start on Monday 18 May 2026.

Rebecca McHugh will also start with us, next week, as our new Pupil Support Worker in our Inclusion team.

Wendy Doig, Pupil Support Leader for Traprain House, leaves us next Thursday after 10 years a Knox Academy. She has been an amazing asset at our school and I would like to express our thanks for all she has done for us – pupils, families, staff and wider community. Wendy will take her expertise on to her new post. We would like to wish her all the very best for the future.

S5-S6 Study Support

E-Sgoil Easter Study Support

2026 Registration for e-Sgoil's 2026 Easter Study Support programme is now open. This is accessible to all Senior Phase learners and is completely free. Study Support comprises live, interactive webinars and are delivered online by experienced, GTCS registered teachers. Almost 60 different webinar subjects are on offer during the week of 6th – 10th April, covering the most popular curricular areas as well as an extensive range of other subjects.

As well as their Easter Study Support programme, they continue to deliver weekly Evening Study Support webinars during term time. Please note that if learners are already registered for the evening programme, they will need to register separately for the Easter programme. Please can parents/carers encourage their young people to make use of this programme to help them with their studies over the Easter holidays too.

Chromebooks

Most of our young people are amazing at bringing their new Chromebooks every day. However a number of young people do not bring them and this hampers them in lessons where these are being used for learning and teaching. Please can we ask for parent/carer support in reminding them to pack them the night before and in ensuring they are fully charged for use.

If your young person is in S4/5/6 and leaving school this year, they must return their Chromebook after their last exam as part of the Leavers process (they do not get to keep them as they belong to ELC). They should return them, fully operational, with the charger, to Miss Patterson. These will then be passed on to other pupils. Thank you for your support in ensuring this.

Uniform

All parents/carers should have received information about our new blended uniform as of August. I would also like to highlight that our Hub/Uniform Bank, of both new and pre-loved uniform, will be available for all to access – just contact the school office to let us know you wish to access it and we can arrange a time for this or, alternatively, young people can also access it too through their House Teams. We have loads of uniform and it would be great to have families accessing it.

Blazers

Even with our new blended uniform approach from August, young people in our senior phase will still be able to elect to wear blazers. Therefore, if any S5/6 pupils wish to purchase a blazer to wear as part of their uniform, they will be able to do so on Thursday 23rd April from 2-7 pm in the library. Borders Embroidery will be in attendance to help measure sizes.

Events/Trips

Spring Concert

It was an absolutely fabulous evening last night with our talented musicians taking to the stage. Our S6 compéres, Keelan Woodhead and Maya Borkowski, were superb at leading the event, which was arranged and run entirely by our pupils - headed up by Bella Gold & Emily Westgarth and supported by their Concert Committee (Iris Pathirana, Brodie Wallace, Imogen Dale, James Gorman and Chloe Milazzo). What great leadership as these concerts take so much organisation! A huge thank you to all who attended and supported our young people and to all those involved in the concert, from performers to stage crew and tech teams. Everyone gave it their all to make it the amazing night it was!

Half of all funds raised will go to the running of future events and the other half to Homestart East Lothian – demonstrating our commitment to supporting our local community. Thank you to Mandy Hockey who attended last night on behalf of this charity.

S6 Leavers’ Ceremony

This is taking place next Thursday afternoon (2 April) and will be a celebration of their time here at Knox Academy. After a formal ceremony at 12.15, and a farewell from me on behalf of all staff, pupils will head off for activities in the PE Dept. We will all then come back together afterwards for a buffet lunch with all staff invited to join S6 for this.

On behalf of all staff here at Knox Academy, we would like to wish them all the very best for their Qualification Scotland exams and in their future (even though we will do this again for the day they are back after the Easter break and before they go on exam leave on the Wednesday). We will also look forward to catching up with them at their Prom. I am sure many of them will also adorn our stage at our Awards Evening in June. I do hope they will all keep in touch with us. They have been a truly amazing year group and I am sure I speak for all staff when I say I really will miss them. They have been great ambassadors for the school and done so much over their time here for both our school and local and wider community.

S4/5 Leavers’ Ceremony

We will also have a gathering for our S4/5 leavers next Thursday morning so we can wish them all the very best in their next steps in life. Even though they are leaving, like the S6, they can continue to seek support from Skills Development Scotland, if they need any support with their pathways over the coming years.

PTA Family Quiz Night - Friday 20th March

What an absolutely fantastic evening! We’re delighted to share that the event raised £436. A huge thank you to everyone who came along, to all the parents and carers who donated raffle prizes, and to The Loft, Castle Park Golf Club, and Tesco for their generous contributions. An extra special thank you also goes to the Rugby Club for kindly letting us use their venue for the quiz — we’re incredibly grateful for their support.

The competition was fierce from start to finish. Going into the final picture round, just 2 points separated the top 4 teams. In a dramatic finish, The Ruthless Gibbons clinched the win by a single point after a brilliant final round. Congratulations to our champions, and a big thank you to all 13 teams who took part and helped make the night such a success.

Artificial Intelligence – What parents need to know

Education Scotland have partnered with The University of Edinburgh to provide a three-part webinar series on Artificial Intelligence (AI) – What parents need to know.

Please note:

Parents can fill in their own personal email address and don’t need a Glow email.  It will however, then ask for a second email.  At that stage they can either add in a work email address if they have one or they can repeat their personal email address.  As long as there is one character at least in that second box it will let them continue.  For example, they could put in a dot or an x.

Staffing

Following interviews on Monday and Tuesday, Bobby Douglas is our preferred candidate based on pre-employment checks.

PT Guidance Post – interviews will take place for this on Monday.

The PE post is being leeted and interviews for this will take place after the Easter break.

ESgoil- S4-S6

It has been great to see so many pupils attending supported study sessions after school. Esgoil is also running a programme over the Easter break and I would encourage our seniors to sign up for this too to support their revision. Pupils will need their GLOW details to do this and they can get these from any of their subject teachers if they don’t already have this.

Uniform Consultation

The outcome of this will be shared with parents/carers and pupils at the beginning of next week.

School Improvement Planning for Session 2026-27

Thank you to the parents/carers who took the time to complete this.  We have also spoken directly with some parents/carers who left specific comments so we could get some more information from them. Overall we got a 13% response from parents/carers to this survey. Although such a small % return rate means that it is not truly representative of the Knox Academy parent/carer group,  we still value the comments and responses made to help us plan for next session.

Rights Respecting Schools (RRSA)

Our Article of focus this week is Article 25 - Review of a child's placement

Every child who has been placed somewhere away from home - for their care, protection or health - should have their situation checked regularly to see if everything is going well and if this is the best place for them to be.

Deaf Awareness

This week's sign of the week is 'help'.  In BSL, signs are often directional so signing 'help me' is different to 'help you'.  Did you know that in BSL, facial expressions are used like tone of voice and emotion in speech!

Spring Concert
The Knox Spring Concert this year will take place on Thursday 26th March, 7-9pm. We are all very excited to have the opportunity to display the wonderful musical talent from many of our students!! We have an excellent programme of groups and individuals performing an array of styles and beautiful music.

All proceeds from the concert are going to be divided between the Knox Spring Concert fund and our chosen charity, Home-Start East Lothian . (By Bella Gold, S6)

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI)

S3 Shine in a Fantastic YPI Final

This year’s YPI final was a real highlight of the school calendar, showcasing the passion, teamwork, and confidence of our S3 pupils. Every group delivered an engaging and thoughtful presentation, demonstrating just how committed they were to supporting causes that make a difference in our community.

After a closely contested final, Robyn Carter and Emily Westgarth emerged as this year’s winners, securing an incredible £3,000 grant for East Lothian Young Carers. Their presentation was powerful, heartfelt, and clearly communicated why the charity plays such an essential role in supporting young people across the region.

The event was slickly and warmly hosted by last year’s winners, Max Sutherland and Ruaridh Mainstone, who kept the morning running smoothly and brought a fantastic sense of continuity to the occasion.

A huge thank you goes to our panel of judges:

  • Fiona Docherty, parent of Knox
  • Louise Begbie, Rotary Secretary
  • Robert Flood - CL social studies
  • Zara Machen - Depute Head

Their thoughtful questions and careful deliberation made the final both rigorous and encouraging for all involved.

This year’s S3 set a high bar with their enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment. Next year’s cohort certainly have big shoes to fill! (By Mrs Reynolds, CL Comms)

A huge thank you to the English team for nurturing the skills of our S3 to be able to research these charities and present on them to such a high level.

Gymnastics

You will remember a few weeks ago I reported that  Kira Mihhailova (S2) competed in the British Gymnastics Qualifier 1 for TeamGym with her team Youth Level 3. They successfully placed 3rd, receiving the bronze medal and were awaiting news about whether or not they would qualify for the British Championships or not. The good news is they have! This will take place on Friday 17th and Saturday the 18th of April in Newcastle. We wish them lots of luck in their performance.

East Lothian Young Musician of the Year

The East Lothian Young Musician of the Year competition took place at St Mary's Kirk on Wednesday 18th March.

Knox Academy was proudly represented by the following young people:

S6 James Gorman - Drum Kit - Funk Junk by Chris Burgess

S2 Gregor Mitchell - Trumpet - The Enchanted Trumpet by Allen Vizzutti

S1 Robin Mitchell - Piano - On the Sunny Side of the Street by Jimmy McHugh

What an outstanding evening of music with an incredibly high standard of musical skill and overall musicianship. James, Gregor and Robin all performed brilliantly and should be very proud of themselves. The music department would like to thank Liz Woodsend for accompanying and to Jennifer Marr and all the IMS staff who work so tirelessly to organise such wonderful extra-curricular events.

Well done also to Fraser Westgarth, Lachlan Baillie, Elyn McInnes and Adam Russel who performed a beautiful arrangement of Moon River with the Wind Ensemble while the judges deliberated.

Anthony Nolan Trust

The last few years many of our S5/S6 has linked with the Anthony Nolan Trust to have a swab taken to see if they are possible donors for life saving stem cell donation. Following this, one of our pupils, Connor Docherty (6G2) has been selected as a possible donor. Herein follows his story.

My donor journey with the Anthony Nolan charity who do excellent work to support people suffering with blood cancer. Becoming a donor is an amazing way to potentially save someone's life through donating stem cells. My stem cell donation is scheduled for mid-March but I've already experienced  part of the donation journey and have committed a significant amount of my time to this.

So what does the donation journey involve? Knox Academy ran an event last year for students over the age of 16 to sign up for the donor list. When a patient needs a stem cell transplant Anthony Nolan will search the donor register and if they find a match they contact the potential donor. If you are a potential match and might be eligible to give stem cells, a nurse will come to your house and take a quick blood test, which only takes about 10 minutes. They take the blood sample to the lab and process it for around 6 to 8 weeks after which you get told if you are a match. Anthony Nolan invites you to the next stage which is a medical. This will involve heading down to the Anthony Nolan Centre in Nottingham. After you finish the medical they'll give you injections to go home with. These injections are taken for the four days before the donation. At this stage you are finally ready for going to your donation which is where I am now.

Anthony Nolan has great support and always has people on the phone that you can talk to about any part of the process. The process does involve a heavy amount of time commitment on your end and travelling a reasonable distance for the medical and donation. I think the effort really pays off given that you're giving someone else a potential treatment for their blood cancer and could save their life.

General Info/Community

About meningitis

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord (meninges). It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening blood poisoning (septicaemia) and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves.

A number of vaccinations are available that offer some protection against meningitis.

Symptoms of meningitis

Symptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and can include:

  • a high temperature (fever) over 37.5C (99.5F)
  • being sick
  • headache
  • a blotchy rash that doesn’t fade when a glass is rolled over it (this won’t always develop)
  • a stiff neck
  • a dislike of bright lights
  • drowsiness or unresponsiveness
  • seizures (fits)

These symptoms can appear in any order and some may not appear.

When to get medical help

You should get medical advice as soon as possible if you’re concerned that you or your child could have meningitis.

Trust your instincts and don’t wait until a rash develops.

Phone 999 for an ambulance or go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department immediately if you think you or your child might be seriously ill.

Phone 111 or your GP practice for advice if you’re not sure if it’s anything serious or you think you may have been exposed to someone with meningitis.

How meningitis is spread

Meningitis is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis is rarer but more serious than viral meningitis.

Infections that cause meningitis can be spread through:

  • sneezing
  • coughing
  • kissing
  • sharing utensils, cutlery and toothbrushes

Meningitis is usually caught from people who carry these viruses or bacteria in their nose or throat but aren’t ill themselves.

It can also be caught from someone with meningitis, but this is less common.

Read more about the causes of meningitis

Vaccinations against meningitis

There are vaccinations offer some protection against certain causes of meningitis.

These include the:

Treatments for meningitis

People with suspected meningitis will usually have tests in hospital to confirm the diagnosis and check whether the condition is the result of a viral or bacterial infection.

Bacterial meningitis usually needs to be treated in hospital for at least a week. Treatments include:

  • antibiotics given directly into a vein
  • fluids given directly into a vein
  • oxygen through a face mask

Viral meningitis tends to get better on its own within 7 to 10 days and can often be treated at home. Getting plenty of rest and taking painkillers and anti-sickness medication can help relieve the symptoms in the meantime. Read more about how meningitis is treated. If you wish to check your young person’s vaccination status please contact your GP.

In Scotland the Teen Booster Vaccination and MenACWY are offered to all S3 pupils and these took place at Knox back in January.

S3 Work Experience

The S3 pupils have been busy trying to arrange placements for their work experience.  This year it is taking place from 11th – 15th May.  Some pupils have found this tricky as, for a variety of reasons, many employers are unable to take school pupils that week.

If you think that you could offer a placement to one of our pupils, we would be very grateful if  you could get in touch using this email address   workexperience@knox.elcschool.org.uk

Uniform Consultation

We have now started reviewing the responses from pupils, parents/carers and staff and will report back on this in the coming weeks.

School Improvement Planning for Session 2026-27

Thank you to all parents/carers who have taken the time to respond to this (89 so far – so about 14% of our parent/carer group). Sunday 15 March, is the final day to respond. Your views are very much valued and we have used these in previous years to help guide the school’s direction so please do complete it to ensure views are representative.

Our Article of focus this week is Article 24 - Health, Water, Food and Environment

Children have the right to the best health care possible, clean water, healthy food and a clean and safe environment to live in.  All adults and children should have information about how to stay safe and healthy.

This term we will be collecting for Lammermuir larder, our local food bank in Haddington - all donations should be in before 1st of April before the Easter holidays.  All non-perishable items such as tins, packets and jars are accepted.  Thanks for your generosity and support as always.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Yesterday the music department had a trip to the Queen's Hall for an open rehearsal with The Scottish Chamber Orchestra. This was a live orchestral experience with award-winning soloist and BBC radio presenter Jess Gillam (Saxophone). It was designed to inspire creativity and enhance understanding of musical concepts used in the repertoire. One higher pupil wrote the following review:

'It was an amazing opportunity to go and see this as before this point I had never seen an orchestra in person before. The orchestra played really good and it was very enjoyable and interesting to listen to as this is not the type of music I usually listen to. It was especially interesting to see how the musicians and the conductor make the orchestra work. Incredible experience would strongly recommend.' Higher Pupil

Haddstock

Knox Academy was delighted to welcome artist and co-founder of Haddstock, Beki Dover, along to speak to S5 Core students on Wednesday 11th March. The rota class is focussing on our school value of Community so it was brilliant to hear about the origins of Haddstock and about the exciting plans for 2026. Haddstock Music & Arts Festival will take place in our town on 29 -31st May. Beki Dover has offered Knox Academy students the opportunity to volunteer with ushering, shadowing sound engineers etc. This is a fabulous way to build confidence as students interact with the public. All Knox volunteers will receive a free Haddstock t-shirt, lunch on the day and a reference. Please email Beki Dover at haddstock@gmail.com to express you interest in volunteering.  www.haddstock.co.uk Thank you (By Mrs Middlemiss)

This involved S4 learners learning various Life Science skills as a taster for a future career or interest in this area. A mixture of - first aid, moving and handling, health testing and screening, infection control and an NHS  practical session. Based at Milton Rd campus at Edinburgh College. This visit helps learners decide and choose courses at school or college to support final future positive destinations.

Edinburgh International Conference Centre Visit (25 February)

S3 Graphics learners recently visited the EICC, the group were treated with a buffet of refreshing healthy breakfast on arrival, and the staff explained their career journeys and what they learnt at school. The main visit theme was to see what Graphics a large venue requires and why they need Graphic Designers on staff, also an interesting tour around the building and behind the scenes look at all that happens at a venue for thousands of visitors, with all the logistics that involves.  The class are now developing some promotional graphics and floorplans for an upcoming event.

Information

If you wish an update on your young person’s progress please contact the House Team, who will then link with staff to collate information for you. Please do not contact teachers directly as we need to ensure their focus, on a day to day basis, is learning and teaching. The House system ensures a coordinated approach to supporting our pupils and links with parents/carers around all support for them. Thank you.

Uniform Consultation

All parents/carers should have received a link to a Knox Academy Uniform Consultation last Friday and a huge thank you to the 401 parents/carers who have completed it so far (quite a number being primary school parents/carers). There are a lot of views on this and it would be good to have all parents/carers views represented, so if you have still to complete it, please do as we need all views to make an informed decision (looking for a 60% return at least) – this is a really pivotal point for the school in terms of next steps. This survey closes on Sunday at midday. All pupils have been surveyed and staff are also being surveyed. If you wish to read the Scottish Government guidance on school uniform you can access it here.

School Improvement Planning for Session 2026-27

Parents/carers should have received an email from me on Monday asking you for your support in completing a questionnaire which will help us identify the key aspects we need to focus on next session. By us all working together we aim to ensure we support all of our young people to achieve their full potential.

Thank you to the 75 parents/carers who have already responded, and I do hope you will all manage to complete our questionnaire by Friday 13 March. The more responses we have ensures we have a true representation of our school community’s views and what you believe are the important aspects we need to focus on to continue to improve – even if you feel things are ticking along fine it is good to hear that too.  Your views are very much valued and we have used these in previous years to help guide the school’s direction.

Pupils and staff are also being asked for their improvement ideas. Once we have feedback from all groups we will look at these collectively and extract the main themes to focus on to help us on our journey to excellence. I will also report back to you about the findings from all groups and our plans for next session.

Deaf Awareness

In the run up to Deaf Awareness week in May, we are introducing a 'BSL Sign of the Week'.  Each week, there will be a new sign and a deaf awareness fact shared with every class, and they will be encouraged to use it in their everyday life!  The first sign is 'how are you?' and will be shared with classes on Monday morning alongside their fact of the week.

Did you know that BSL is a language in its own right?  It was legally recognised as a language in 2003!
