A huge congratulations to Erin Laing, our Modern Studies probationer, who has been appointed to a permanent post at Beeslack High School and starts there in August.

Sports Day (S1-S3)

Thank you to all those that took part in this years' Sports Day, albeit later than usual in the calendar, the enthusiasm and support provided by all pupils was exceptional and many results saw improvements for those that recently represented and competed at county sports.

The first event of the morning saw the competitors is the 1500m, the longest track event. This was well attended and was great to see so much encouragement from those not competing. The standout results from this event were from Emily Westgarth (S1); Laurie Scott (S1); Freddy Fendick (S2); Ava Smith (S3) and Lachlan Bailie (S3). As the morning progress, the year groups rotated around all field events. Harry Lewis (S1) also put in an exceptional effort that we were all extremely proud of.

The high jump provided a great source of entertainment with Euan Shephard (S1) clearing 1.55m with a huge jump and Ingrid Maycock replicating a great performance for the S1 girls. Morven Kenny gave a strong performance for the S2 girls and Max Wishart and Aaron Baptie shared the S2 boys high jump accolades, clearly taking inspiration from Tamberi and Barshim's performances at the Tokyo Olympics!  Oscar Libberton was successful with his jumps for the S3 and took home that crown! The long jump saw some of our performances close to clearing the sand pits with S1 Euan Shephard taking the crown in 4.50m (the furthest jump of the day) - and with Dillon Burns only a few centimetres behind. Gabia Jagminaite (S2) showed her composure to jump an exceptional 3.90m, closely followed by Morven Kenny. Emily Westgarth (S1), Matthew Cecil (S2), Kyla Hynd (S3) and Oscar Libberton (S3) also put in great performances!

The shot putt was another fiercely competitive event with great support from all. Annellisse While and Robbie Hamilton took him 1st place for S1; Aifric Fisher and Ruaridh Mainstone (S2) and Luke Marshall (S3) of the further throw of the day with over 10m! Further throwing opportunities came with the discus with Robbie Hamilton, Ingrid Maycock, Jack Fraser all putting in exceptional performances.

To wrap up the day, the 100m, 200m and 800m were undertaken by the masses! The 800m saw Morven Kenny (S2) accelerate to an early lead and a strong finish in the girls race, as well as Freddy Fendick (S2) leading the way for the boys.  The 100m races were split from photo finishes with the following pupils taking home 1st place: Euan Shephard (S1); Rosa Middlemiss (S1); Addie Eardley (S2); Morven Kenny (S2); David Hunter (S3); Ava Smith (S3). The 200m saw some new faces on the podium with Summer Gaffney (S3) taking a storming performance in the S3 girls race (By PE Dept).

The full results  are now published in the PE department.

S6 Prom

It was wonderful to catch up with our S6 Leavers at the Prom last Friday night at Whitekirk Hill. They looked stunning in their outfits. Following a delicious buffet meal, the Head Pupils’ speech was very amusing and recounted the high points of the last six years. Everyone had fun mixing in and dancing the night away. We hope that they will all continue to keep in touch with us and let us know how they are getting on in life and, as former pupils, come back and inspire others at the school telling us about their successes.

School Improvement Plan

We have used the East Lothian Education priorities and staff, pupils and parents/carers feedback to devise our school improvement priorities for next session – 2024-25.

Evening of Celebration

It was great to come together, last night, as a school community, to celebrate the achievements of our young people. There were many awards for academic excellence and achievement in our local and wider community. Congratulations to all our young people who received an award last night and thank you to all parents/carers and partners of the school, who came along to support them. Thank you also goes to Irene Ogilvie, from Haddington Rotary, who provided a number of awards on the evening. It was also wonderful to welcome John Arnold (actor) as our Guest Speaker at the Senior Awards Ceremony and for him to offer advice about ‘showing up’ and giving of your best. A huge thank you to Leila Maycock and Indie Phoenix-Hill for representing the Pupil Leadership Team and speaking about their highlights over the last six years at Knox Academy.

A huge thank you to the staff at our school for their unwavering support of our young people across the year and in helping them to achieve their potential and goals. Also, thank you to all of our parents/carers who are the inspiration for your young people on a day to day basis and encouraging them to be th best version of themselves and achieve their best.

Finally, on behalf of all at Knox Academy, I would want to pass on our best wishes to any of our young people who are leaving school this year and venturing on to pastures new. Create meaningful, purposeful and fulfilling lives for yourselves and learn how to use your talents to make an impact and a difference to the lives of others. Please do keep in touch to let us know how you are getting on.

Grease

This was absolutely amazing!!!! The quality of acting, singing and dancing was just phenomenal and we couldn’t be more proud of our young people and staff who took part in this performance, gave it their all and wowed the audience. So many of us clapped or sang along to the tunes, so there was great audience participation over the two nights as well. There are so many people to thank for bringing this show to fruition. Firstly, a huge thank you to our amazing cast starting with our dancers and actors.  They worked tirelessly all year showing real grit and determination throughout the entire rehearsal period. Well done to you all - you blew us away with your talent and we all thoroughly enjoyed your performances!

Next I would like to thank all of the staff and pupils who have helped with the production of the show.  We have: Nick Ball -for his particularly creative skills in props; Nick Tait - for designing our Grease posters; Katie Johnston, Anya Reynolds and Imogen Hunsley for their amazing set design; Mia Colquhoun, Casey Burgess and Isla Hogg for programming and running the stage lights; Liam Morrison for sound and microphones; Aillie Docherty and Rachel Fox for their tireless efforts helping with choreography and production; our Office staff and Senior Leadership Team for all their support; our PTA for serving the refreshments and  our janitors for setting up for us. A huge thank you to our staff team who have championed this production from Day 1 - Jo Donald and Aileen McSherry for their amazing choreography skills.  All the dances looked spectacular. Laura Bates who single-handedly dressed this show, opening both her wardrobe and her heart, and was also part of the choreography and marketing team. Emma Reynolds, our very own "Lady Lynch" who's been a part of our directive and production team from the beginning, providing the cast with many laughs along the way. Adam Welsh, otherwise known as Johnny Casino, who co-directed, oversaw sound and generously offered his velvet voice. Finally, my biggest thanks goes to Ashleigh Breslin, our director, and the brain and heart of this production.  Without her vision and drive we would not have had this show.  We now can't wait for the next one!!!  My final thanks goes to all of our parents/carers, pupils and friends of the school who came along on the evenings to support the show.

Staffing

Congratulations to Ms McBride, our PT Equity, who was appointed to the DHT Outreach post for the next 23 months. She will be amazing at this. This now creates a Modern Languages position at our school and the advert will go live for this in a few weeks.

SQA

In keeping with last year, the Appeals Service will continue to be free and available for learners to access directly if they are concerned about a National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher grade and feel there may have been a mistake in the marking.

You can appeal directly to the SQA but we would ask that as soon as you return to school on Wednesday 14 August, you speak to the Curriculum Leader of the subject you would like to appeal in us and we can discuss this with you. Ms Machen is our SQA Coordinator this year so she will also be able to assist you.

The SQA’s Appeals Service will open on Results Day, Tuesday 6 August at 9 am, and the learner direct submission deadlines are: Tuesday 13 August at 11.59 pm for priority appeals and Tuesday 27 August at 11.59pm for all other appeals. Your appeal can only be prioritised if you have a conditional place at university or college, or in training or employment that depends on your grade.

What is the Appeals Service?

If you appeal your grade, a senior appointee will carry out a marking review of your SQA-marked assessments. This is not a re-mark. A marking review checks that: all parts of your SQA-assessments have been marked; the marking is in line with national standards; the marks given for each answer have been totalled correctly; and the correct result has been entered on our system.

Please note that after being reviewed, your result could stay the same, go up or go down.

Evening of Celebration

This will take place on Thursday 20 June, with the S1-S2 ceremony at 6pm and the S3-S6 ceremony at 8pm. All young people receiving awards should have their invite by this Friday at latest. The S1-S2 awards are based on academic attainment in subjects and each subject area (not teacher) can nominate up to a maximum of twenty pupils in each year group. By awarding twenty pupils in each subject area we hope to create ‘ambition’ in our young people that will carry their work ethic through to S3 and beyond.  In S3-S6, pupils have selected their subjects, and hence our award process changes to reflect this, with only one pupil being awarded in each subject area e.g. in Biology – it will be the top performer in this subject in terms of academic attainment (highest percentage in all tests across the year).

S5 and S6 pupils

As we have now started the new timetable all S5 pupils should have full timetables (no blank periods at all) and all S6 pupils may have some non-contact periods, which they should use for study, volunteering or work experience. All S5 and S6 pupils must attend registration each morning as often this is when important information is disseminated or we call assemblies. S5/6 have elected to return to school and must show commitment to achieving their best throughout the year.

Grease

A reminder that tickets are now on sale for the school musical - Grease. Performances will be on 17 June & 18 June at 19.30pm each evening. The cast has been working tirelessly on this production for the whole year, and are very excited to perform. Tickets are on sale every lunch time in the school canteen and cost £7 for adults and £5 children/concessions.

Quadrant

A final reminder to submit any designs to  njones@knox.elcschool.org.uk by Friday 7 June at latest. Thank you.

This is a massive achievement, and we are very proud of them. Their hard work, determination and commitment to rugby has been incredible. They are great ambassadors for our school and give as much dedication to their studies as they do to their rugby too. We are very excited to see what the future brings for them!
