June 2025

Published: 20 June 2025

It has been a busy few weeks at Knox Academy and I can hardly believe we are about to enter the last week of term – the year has flown by! This will be my last update of the year so I would like to thank parents/carers for all their support throughout the year and we will look forward to working with you again next session. In the meantime, have a great summer holiday.

Staffing

A huge thank you to Hannah Milne, who has been part of our Geography and Social Subjects team at Knox Academy over much of this session. We wish her all the very best for the future.

I am delighted to say that our current probationers, Elijah Morris, Rebecca Milliken and Katy Coats have been appointed to posts in ELC and the City of Edinburgh. We have been so lucky to have them here at Knox Academy for this year and hope the experience gained here has prepared them well for their next steps in their new schools. Thank you for all you have done here and all the very best for the future.

Evening of Celebration

It was great to come together, on Wednesday night, as a school community, to celebrate the achievements of our young people. There were many awards for academic excellence and achievement in our local and wider community. Congratulations to all our young people who received an award last night and to all parents/carers and partners of the school, who came along to support them. Thank you also goes to John McMillan, our Provost and also Haddington Rotary member, who provided a number of awards on the evening. It was also wonderful to welcome Glenn Campbell as our Guest Speaker at the Senior Awards Ceremony and for him to talk about the opportunities and challenges life presents and how to rise to these. Glenn also talked about ‘no wrong path’ and how we will all navigate our careers differently and gain insight from our experiences along the way. His speech was pitch perfect and what he talked about resonated with all in the audience.

I would also like to say a huge thank you to the staff at our school for their unwavering support of our young people across the year and in helping them to achieve their potential and goals. Also, thank you to all our parents/carers who are the inspiration for their young people’s achievements on a day to day basis.

Finally, on behalf of all at Knox Academy, I would want to pass on our best wishes to any of our young people who are leaving school this year and venturing on to pastures new. Create meaningful and purposeful, fulfilling lives for yourselves and learn how to use that to make an impact and a difference to the lives of others. Please do keep in touch to let us know how you are getting on.

Uniform

A letter was issued to all parents/carers around uniform expectations for the new session. It would be great if parents/carers support us with this, for the reasons outlined in the letter. Thank you.

Duke of Edinburgh

Last week saw 3 teams, comprising 18 pupils from the new S4 successfully completing their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award qualifying expedition. This is the culmination of a year's work for pupils who have been busy throughout the year with weekly training sessions as well as working on physical activities and skills in their own time. In addition, they have all been working voluntarily in the community as part of their award which has helped them gain new confidence and skills   as well as making a valuable contribution to a wide range of local organisations and charities.

The expedition (and the practice expedition back in May) are always highlights for DofE participants and this year was no exception, being blessed with lovely weather for both expeditions (perhaps even a bit too hot on each occasion! We're grateful to the Lanterne Rouge cafe in Gifford for filling pupils' water bottles each time they passed through Gifford!). Pupils really enjoyed the challenge of planning all aspects of their qualifying expedition and being self-sufficient throughout. There were many great examples of teamwork throughout the two days, each team working as an efficient community to help each other through the various challenges they faced.

We look forward to presenting participants with their award certificates and badges in the new term and to starting a new Bronze Award programme soon after that.

Trips

We have had a number of trips out this week: The Royal Highland Show, The Army Leadership Course (S6)  and an S2 (new S3) camping trip (Thursday/Friday).

We also have an S5/6 Spanish trip (to a film) going out next week. Thank you to staff for organising these and I know a great time was had/will be had by all.

What a great week it has been weather wise, which was brilliant for our County Sports. I can hardly believe that we are racing towards the end of term but there are still so many exciting events to come such as our Primary Transition (today/Monday/Tuesday) and our Awards Evening next Wednesday evening.

Staffing

The following staff will all start at Knox Academy in August:

Geography – Mrs Sophie Coats (1 day a week, permanent) and Ms Stobie returns to Knox Academy next Friday.

Maths – Ms Chloe McNeill (1 year temporary)

Senior Business Support Assistant – Mrs Josie Campbell

Physics – Jon Foster

P7 Parents’ Information Evening

Great to see so many parents/carers attend this information evening last night prior to the P7s coming up today to Knox Academy for their 3 day visit. Today is all about meeting their new class and some ice breakers. When they return on Monday/Tuesday they will be following their new timetable and meeting their teachers.

SQA

In keeping with last year, the Appeals Service will continue to be free and available for learners to access directly if they are concerned about a National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher grade and feel there may have been a mistake in the marking.

You can appeal directly to the SQA but we would ask that as soon as you return to school on Wednesday 14 August, you speak to the Curriculum Leader of the subject you would like to appeal in and we can discuss this with you. Mr Illingworth is our SQA Coordinator this year so she will also be able to assist you.

The SQA’s Appeals Service will open on Results Day, Tuesday 5 August at 9 am, and the learner direct submission deadlines are: Tuesday 12 August at 11.59 pm for priority appeals and Tuesday 26 August at 11.59pm for all other appeals. Your appeal can only be prioritised if you have a conditional place at university or college, or in training or employment that depends on your grade.

What is the Appeals Service?

If you appeal your grade, a senior appointee will carry out a marking review of your SQA-marked assessments. This is not a re-mark. A marking review checks that: all parts of your SQA-assessments have been marked; the marking is in line with national standards; the marks given for each answer have been totalled correctly; and the correct result has been entered on our system.

Please note that after being reviewed, your result could stay the same, go up or go down.

School Improvement Plan

We have used the East Lothian Education priorities and staff, pupils’ and parents/carers feedback and our own self-evaluation processes (e.g. Faculty Reviews) to devise our School Improvement Plan (SIP) for next session – 2025-26. Please find the overview of our SIP and the full version of Standards and Quality Report (progress across this year) and the full School Improvement Plan can be viewed on our website after the summer holidays.

Quadrant

The quadrant is progressing well and will become a bookable outdoor classroom from August onwards. This will afford lots of opportunities for learning and teaching across the majority of subject areas from Science to English and the Social Sciences. I have attached some pictures of the mushroom seats and planters. There is also a small pond, lots more seats, planters and the Totem Pole still to be placed in the area. It is great to have this come to fruition after years of planning and fantastic that it was designed by our parents/carers and pupils. A huge thank you to the family who funded this in memory of their wife/mum who was a Dux at Knox Academy.

Music

The Maxwell String Quartet is delighted to invite everyone to their next concert in the Bridging: East Lothian series, taking place this Friday 13th June in the Fraser Centre at 3pm. Tickets are free for all school aged young people. This will be a special concert as they’ll be joined by some of Knox Academy's strings players as part of the concert. Tickets can be bought via the Brunton Theatre website. Find out more about the fabulous quartet here.

County Sports

Wow...you should have been there!!  Our 50 strong students that made up the Knox Academy Team were challenging for every top position in the County Athletics Championships this Tuesday 10th June. Fabulous effort from all and a superb team spirit brought us great rewards. We had so many top placed athletes across the Field and Track events.

We surpassed our previous ranking and came 2nd overall out of the 7 County schools. Wonderful!! Congratulations.

A huge well done to Morven Kenny (new S4) who won a bronze medal at the Scottish Secondary Schools Pentathalon Championships last weekend, which is amazing as there was also over 50 competitors in her age group.

What an experience to share the stage with professional musicians. We are also looking forward to Rosanna performing for us at our awards evening next week.

A huge congratulations to Adam Russel (new S2) who was awarded Distinction for his recent Alto Saxophone Trinity exam. Adam scored an outstanding 95%.

Staffing

Maths and Physics (temporary for one year). Interviews for both these postS are taking place next week.

Probationers –we are looking forward to welcoming Kate Allen (Modern Studies) and Jordan Brunton (History).

New Timetable

All our learners have now moved up a year group and started their new timetables. If there are any concerns around this they should speak to their House Teams. It seems, however, that almost all pupils have timetables they are happy with and have made a great start.

S2 Careers Inspiration Day

A huge thank you to all the companies who came in to work with our S2 pupils last Friday – Balfour Beatty; EDF Energy; Historic Environment Scotland; Leonadro; Snugg – SFE; Tangram Furnishings; Go Fibre; 3D Reid; Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. The tasks this companies provided for our young people were very engaging, with many involving teamwork. They were all in praise of our young people’s application throughout the sessions. A huge thank you to Elaine Gorman (DYW) and Mr Russell for organising this.

BGE Ceremony

This took place yesterday and the Pupil Support Leaders did an amazing job of making it a memorable occasion for all. It was great to have a group of our new S4 pupils leading the ceremony. We wish all our new S4 the very best for their senior phase and look forward to working with them to ensure they achieve their best over the years to come.

PTA Meeting - Thursday 12th June @ 7pm in Knox Academy School Library.

It is our final PTA meeting of the school year. We are a very small group of parents who meet once a term to raise much needed funds for the school. As a few of our parents have children in S6, it is now crucial to recruit additional volunteers to sustain the PTA and provide the necessary financial resources for the school. If you are available, we would be delighted to welcome you on Thursday 12th June, in the School Library.  If you can’t make the meeting but would be available to help, please get in touch by email. Sports Day

Our S1-S3 Knox competitors put in amazing performances on Wednesday, trying their best to get PB's in all the events that they entered, despite the wind and rain. Some fabulous records were set. A huge congratulations to all who took part and Team PE for running it and inspiring our athletes to do their best!

Staff Successes

East Lothian Council staff in Facilities Management were hailed for their achievements after being nominated as finalists at the ASSIST FM Scottish National Awards.

The awards recognise excellence, commitment and professionalism among the country’s 32 local authorities.

Senior Facilities Assistant Karen Kelly, who is the driving force behind a breakfast club for Meadowpark, was nominated for the Community Focus Award. Meadowpark, part of Knox Academy secondary school in Haddington, is a specialist provision for young people with complex needs primarily associated with autism spectrum disorder.

Karen, who is pictured, established the school’s breakfast club in 2021 and its popularity has grown with around half of the 57 pupils taking part.
