The new Enterprise Hub (know as The Community Kettle) has been awarded £1,000 in the Tom Hunter Foundation 100 Disrupter competition amongst thousands of entries. The competition was open to young people or groups up to the age of 26 who are "positively disrupting Scotland". From the 100 disrupters, the Tom Hunter Foundation will build a platform to showcase all 100 ambitions and will ensure they will be attempted or realised.

The Enterprise Hub (The Community Kettle) will create an all-inclusive stimulating environment within the school where their enterprising ideas and ambitions can become a reality. The Community Kettle will provide leadership opportunities and life skills as well as providing a space in which pupils can be themselves and can widen and further develop their networks. The hub aims  to challenge stereotypes of young people and offer opportunities to build new relationships within the community. This involves networking with local business owners and coming up with innovative ideas that will benefit not only the school but the wider community. The aim is for the hub to become self-sustainable.

The Community Kettle has upcycled desks destined for landfill and has developed the brand named I.D (Individual desks) as a trade name for them.  The plan is to sell to families for use by young children. The desks are being upcycled in partnership with Wee Red Upcycles which is a local social enterprise and we were funded by Haddington Area Partnership to do the work at the school.

As a side project, if it was possible to find a partner that could transport these to Africa we may also look at a link up with children overseas. In addition to this we would equip the space fit for purpose so as to encourage entrepreneurial activities and to help people feel relaxed and open. We would also invest some of the money into creating a small SEED fund to encourage viable, profitable, sustainable ideas and this would be decided by creating a competition for pupils to enter.

A percentage of profits generated by individual initiatives will come back into the Community Kettle thereby supporting sustainability.

As a result of the confusion over the past few days we wanted to update parents and pupils as to why we have had to ask for additional payment of £6.00 for this years Leavers' Dance. Unfortunately, initially numbers attending the event were not calculated correctly until very late last week. As we have to pay per head for the meal the venue have issued an invoice for the increased number of people attending. Please be aware that this includes staff and pupils and that both have paid in full in order to attend the event.

If you have not already done so please can you ensure that  £6.00 cash is handed into the school office by 3pm on Wednesday 20 June 2018. As ever, we hope all of the S6 have a great time on the night.

As a result of high winds on 14 June and the identification of an issue with blockwork, additional inspections have been carried out at Knox Academy. As a precaution an area continues to be cordoned off and structural engineers have advised that remedial works should be undertaken. These remedial works will be undertaken during the school summer holiday period and the school will remain open as usual.

Due to high winds, additional inspections were conducted by FES on the East Lothian secondary school estate. These inspections identified an issue with the block work at Knox Academy. As a precaution, the area was cordoned off and structural engineers are attending to advise remedial work.

All processes are in place to address this matter promptly. It is anticipated, at this time, that the school will open as normal tomorrow (Friday 15 June 2018).

We will update further, in due course.

The council is launching a new school payments system, IPayimpact, which enables parents to make a range of payments online. This replaces the online payments system that is currently used.
IPayimpact is now available to schools in the Haddington cluster area, and will be rolled out to the rest of our schools in September.
If your school is in the Haddington cluster area i.e. Haddington Infant School, King’s Meadow, St Mary’s RC and Yester Primary Schools, and Knox Academy: iPayimpact, is now live!
Parents of primary pupils can now make informed menu choices in advance, and can pay for meals online. Payments for milk and trips are also possible, including the option to make payments in instalments for larger expenses e.g. school trips. Payments can be tracked electronically meaning that parents can see when payments are due and how much is still outstanding. Quick and easy to use, it puts you in control of their finances. It’s also mobile responsive, which means you can use it ‘on the go’ on your phone or tablet.
If you’ve not yet activated your account, it’s quick and easy to do – why not do it today? Look out your invitation letter for information on what to do.  If you do not have your invitation letter, please get in touch with the School Office.
If your school is not in the Haddington cluster area: don’t worry, nothing changes for you at the moment. We plan to roll out the new system to your area in September - we will be in touch with you after the summer with more information.
