In association with all other East Lothian Secondary schools, we use a well respected system to assess and monitor learners, to help predict future achievement and monitor and track progress. We use a system which is administered and developed by CEM (Centre for Education and Monitoring).
Learners will complete three, one off assessments in May of S2 on a computer. Each assessment will last 45 minutes and will focus on three areas, namely Reading, Science and Mathematics. These three assessments are known collectively as Curriculum Based Assessments and are developed by Durham University to measure developed abilities that can help predict future achievement.
These Curriculum Based Assessments provide us with further information to enable us to fully support your child in his/her academic progress and allow us to track and monitor effectively. It is important to note that this does not in any way replace our regular school and national assessments. Rather we use this information to enhance our existing measures.
Second year pupils will have the opportunity to undertake the three separate assessments from the week beginning 2nd May 2016 over a two week period, in Maths, English and Science lessons.
Hopefully our learners will enjoy the challenge! Please note that these are specifically designed not to require any preparation or revision. This said it is important for pupils to try their best in such assessments to help give a true measure of their abilities.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Pupils sitting fewer than three National 5 exams this session, will have the majority of their courses at National 4 Level. This means they are likely to have assignments and added-value units to complete. On that basis, they are not entitled to full exam leave. They are entitled to the day off before an exam, and the day of the exam itself, but would otherwise be expected to come into school as per the programme below:
Pupils were issued previously with a letter detailing this. Could you please return the tear-off slip acknowledging receipt and letting us know whether your child would like to participate in the John Muir award. I would be grateful if all returns could be made by Tuesday 26 April 2016.
If you want to have your say in how the Library Service evolves, please fill in the survey at http://edubuzz.limequery.org/index.php/391933/lang-en
The survey closes on the 9th May.
We would like to remind parents/carers of our Online Payment System which avoids pupils carrying cash/cheques to school; it is our preferred payment system for subject payments, activities week excursions etc.
We have been notified by East Lothian Council that charges for credit card payments have changed - however these can be avoided with the use of a debit card.
The surcharge rates for commercial and standard credit cards changed recently (originally 1.9%).
The new charges are 2.4% for all commercial credit cards and 1.4% for all standard credit cards.
S3-S6 pupils who have missed the vaccinations (noted below) at school have another opportunity at the following drop-in session:
Date: Saturday 16th April 2016
Time: Drop in between 9am – 4pm
Venue: Esk Medical Centre, 21 Ladywell Way, Musselburgh, EH21 6AB (opposite the Brunton Theatre)
Please report to reception on arrival.
The SQA have published a useful booklet entitled "Your Exams 2016" providing important advice for candidates on what to do before, during and after their exams.
Further information about SQA exams can be viewed on the SQA Your Exams website. Translations are available in other languages including Polish.
Pupils will be issued with the following letter from Fiona Robertson (Head of Education) concerning East Lothian Council's School Estate at registration tomorrow.
