The S1 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network) Challenge team, accompanied by Mr Blair and Ms Machen, were in London for the STEM Challenge 6 National final.

Although the team did not win, they were praised for their participation and enthusiasm.  Mr. Blair reported that the pupils were very well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The feedback from the judges can be read in the document downloadable below.

As the first team from Scotland to reach the final this was a fantastic achievement and they all seem keen to try again when the next Challenge comes along.

A little about the competition...

The competition asked students from across the UK to work in teams to design a website for Rachel Morris, one of Great Britain’s leading paralmypians and a Cisco London 2012 ambassador.

STEM Challenge 6, sponsored by Cisco, asked students to design a web presence for Rachel Morris, a handcycling gold medalist. Students worked in teams completing tasks connected to the curriculum to create a design that could help to raise Rachel’s profile in the run up to the London 2012.

Following regional competitions, eight schools from across the UK reached the national final on Friday 8 July. Each team of students aged 11-14 competed in a Dragon’s Den style pitch before a panel of expert judges:

  • Rachel Morris, Paralympian
  • Darren Bolton, Executive Creative Director, DNX Marketing
  • Neil Crockett, MD, London 2012, Cisco
  • Chris Thompson the Director of Business, Innovation and External Affairs from Ravensbourne College

Rachel Morris, Team GB Paralympian said:
"Technology is a big part of my sport, with advancements over the last few decades opening up Paralympic cycling to a wider range of categories, events and competitors. As I prepare for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, it will be great to get school students from across the country involved in my preparations, as well as helping educate more people about handcycling and reflex sympathetic dystrophy."

The STEM Challenges get students thinking about the real-life issues that STEM professionals behind the scenes of the 2012 Games face on a daily basis and also give young people a chance to connect with the Olympic and Paralympic Games between now and 2012. The aim is for students to experience STEM skills in practice and understand that STEM doesn’t just happen in the classroom but is a hugely important and enthralling sector to be involved in.

The Knox Academy team consisted of Chloe Craig, Isla Macdonald, Peter Macaldowie, William Syme and Harriet Lomholt-Welch.

A few words from our Careers Adviser....

Hi, I am Jennifer Jones, the Careers Adviser for Knox Academy. The organisation I work for is Skills Development Scotland. I am usually in school all day on a Wednesday and a Thursday morning. Most of this time is spent carrying out 1:1 careers interviews with pupils in S4 – S6.

At their interview pupils have the chance to talk about their career ideas, ask questions and explore their options. I will be asking them lots of questions too!!  At the end of their interview pupils may get a ‘Plan of Action’ with a list of things they need to do. A copy of this is given to their Guidance teacher.

I visit each S4, S5 and S6 class during the first half of the academic year to do a careers based lesson, explain my role and how pupils can get in touch. They are also issued with a Careers Newsletter with my contact details and lots of other useful information about careers and planning their future.

On a Wednesday during morning break I hold a ‘Careers Drop-In’ where any pupil from S1 – S6 can come along to ask a question. Pupils in S4, S5 and S6 can request a careers interview by completing a interview request form – these are available in the careers section of the school library and from the school librarian and guidance staff. Competed cards should be placed in the careers box in the library or they can be handed to the school librarian or their Guidance teacher.

When I am not in school I can be contacted by email or ‘phone. I’d be happy to hear from you so please get in touch if you have any questions.

The SQA examination results are due to be issued to pupils on Thursday 4 August 2011. We hope that all our pupils receive the results that they deserve, but are aware that examination results may result in the desire to change subjects or levels within a subject.

Once you have your results, you may need to consider changing your subjects or levels.

If you need only to change the level of a subject within a column, then you can discuss the change on your return to school with the subject department.

On Thursday 11 August between 10 am and 12 noon, members of the Guidance Team will be in school for pupils who wish to discuss re-coursing options and exam results.

Information below comes from the SQA with regard to the MySQA Service.

It is now very close to exam results day and we wanted to let you know the arrangements for how we will send exam results to students who have activated their MySQA accounts.

Email
We will send an email containing exam results to students who have activated their MySQA account, sat exams at Standard Grade, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher or Advanced Higher, and have opted to receive an email, by 9 am on Thursday 4 August 2011.

Text
We will send a text message containing exam results to students who have activated their MySQA account, sat exams at Standard Grade, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher or Advanced Higher, and have signed up to the text messaging service, by 9 am on Thursday 4 August 2011.

Students who have a MySQA account will still receive a certificate through the post on Thursday 4 August 2011.

If a student did not activate their MySQA account they will NOT receive their exam results by email and/or text. They will, however, receive their certificate through the post on Thursday 4 August 2011.

The MySQA service is now closed and will reopen on 8 August 2011

At least four of the five performances broadcast live from Knox Academy as part ofthe recent National Theatre of Scotland “Five Minute Theatre” event are now available for replay on Five Minute Theatre’s YouTube channel.

The Knox performances were mentioned by the Scotsman’s theatre critic Joyce McMillan in her review of this unique event, and are definitely worth viewing if you didn’t get the chance to see the live performance online.

For some shows, there is nothing more than a single camera pointing at a distant stage, across the heads of the audience; in others – like Knox Academy’s astonishing multiple one-on-one drama Secrets And Lies, broadcast live on Wednesday morning – the camera almost becomes one of the actors.

These performances demonstrated the power of live web streaming as a powerful learning tool enabled by fast school internet connections, such as those provided to Scottish local authorities via the Glow “Interconnect 2″ service.

As part of our School Development Plan, we are working on improving links with the local community and developing partnership working with the local community and parents.

As part of this, we would like to gather information on the local community’s perception of the school and its work. We would be grateful if parents/carers and/or members of the local community could answer the questions by clicking this link.

The results will be collated and analysed and will impact on the School Development Plan for Session 2011/2012.

If you haven't already completed the survey we would encourage you to do so - your views are important.

The Survey will remain open until Friday 1 July 2011.
