DRAMA OPPORTUNITIES

Some fantastic dramatical opportunities for pupils at Knox Academy:

 

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street!

Academy productions are proud to announce that after the sucess of the 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' we will be returning in December with our new production of 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' the play version. 

Auditions will be held shortly - see posters around the school for further details.

 

Theatre Arts Workshops

Come along on Tuesdays after school to learn about stage makeup, creating old bruises, cuts and other special theatrical effects.

Places limited so first come, first served!

Starts Tuesday 7 September in Drama Studio 2 from 4 pm until 5 pm.

 

S1 Monday Drama Club

Learn about slapstick, exaggerated movement and have fun with masks after school – Starting Monday 6 September from 4 pm until 5 pm in Drama Studio 2.

S5/6 UCAS INFORMATION EVENING

We wish to invite you to an information evening which we have organised to give parents and pupils information on a range of topics relating to University and the UCAS process.  The information evening will be held Wednesday 8 September at 7.30 pm at Knox Academy.

There will be a variety of speakers in attendance including representatives from:
 

  • Edinburgh Napier Univeristy
  • Our Careers Advisor - Jennifer Lawson
  • The University of Edinburgh
  • Queen Margaret University
  • LEAPS

We have asked speakers to cover a variety of topics.  This will help support pupils and parents/carers through the UCAS process and application forms this academic session.  If you wish any further information, please contact Mrs Garwood via the School Office on 01620 823387 or by email.

S5/6 OPPORTUNITIES

Two fantastic opportunities available to senior pupils at Knox Academy ...

S5/6 Careers Convention:

Edinburgh Napier University Craiglockhart Campus on Tuesday 31 August and Wednesday 1 September. Knox Academy has been given the time slot of 9.30 am - 11 am on 31 August, but pupils can attend with parents/carers 4.30 pm - 6 pm on 31 August. Parental consent forms must be returned to Mrs Garwood by Friday 27 August. Cost £3.

 

S6 pupils - 2Moro's Driver:

Knox Academy has been given the opportunity to attend the '2Moro's Driver' event at the Brunton Theatre in Musselburgh on Wednesday 1 September. The event is organised by Lothian and Borders Police Road Safety Unit and is open to pupils in S6.

It is a multi-agency event, which is based on a play funded by Road Safety Scotland. It deals with the fun, risks and the responsibilities involved when becoming a new driver and getting a first car. Parental consent forms must be returned to Mrs Garwood by Friday 27 August. No cost.

NUMERACY BOOKLET LAUNCH

Shortly all S1 pupils will have a copy of the East Lothian Numeracy booklet.  The booklet shows strategies for numeracy techniques/skills across learning.

NEW YORK 2011

Can all pupils please remember to fill out their VISA waiver application online, by early September 2010.  The United States of America will soon start charging you to do this, so do it now to avoid being charged.

There are still several places still available on the exciting New York Trip for S5/S6 pupils, which departs in Feb 2011!  If you are interested please see Mr Campbell asap.

LEARNING FOR LIFE AWARDS

Congratulations to Katie Archibald (2T3) and Perry Stewart (1T3) who recently won prizes in the Learning for Life Awards, after a series of lessons in RME.

Katie won 1st prize in the Learning for Life Awards (Level 2) and Perry won 2nd prize (Level 1) so Knox Academy was well represented in the awards.

Some Background on the Programme

The Values Poster Awards is a rewarding learning activity for S1-S4 pupils.  It helps them to explore their character, ideals and values through a unique poster template using supporting resources.  It is an innovative, personalised learning opportunity that enables young people to identify and examine their core values and character qualities, helping them build a foundation for lifelong practical wisdom.

In Scotland, the programme reflects the words inscribed on the mace of the Scottish Parliament: wisdom, justice, compassion, integrity, as well as the aspirations of the Scottish Government’s A Curriculum for Excellence which seeks to enable all children to develop their capacities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society.

S5/6 RE-COURSING

The SQA examination results are due to be issued to pupils on 5 August 2010.  We hope that all our pupils receive the results that they deserve, but are aware that examination results may result in the desire to change subjects or levels within a subject.

Once you have your results, you may need to consider changing your subjects or levels. 

If you need only to change the level of a subject within a column, then you can discuss the change on your return to school with the subject department.

If, however, you need to swap columns, then guidance staff will be available in the school on Thursday 12 August from 10 am to discuss the options available to you.

LESSONS FROM AUSCHWITZ

Since 1999, over 10,000 pupils and teachers have taken part in the Holocaust Educational Trust's groundbreaking Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

Based on the premise that 'hearing is not like seeing', this four-part course explores the universal lessons of the Holocaust and its relevance for today. The LFA Project aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust for young people and to clearly highlight what can happen if prejudice and racism become acceptable.

Through the Lessons from Auschwitz Project, students and their teachers take part in two afternoon seminars and a one-day visit to the former Nazi extermination and concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in order to then pass on the lessons in their schools and communities.

 

Knox Academy has been successful in being allocated placements for two pupils on the project for Session 2010-2011.

Following inverviews on Thursday 1 July, the successful pupils who will start the 'Lessons from Auschwitz Project' in the new academic year are Evie McGregor (S5) and Aileen McKnight (S6)
