GETTING AROUND

Getting around East Lothian

Community and supported transport – is there a better way?

Transport and the ability to get around impacts on everyone in East Lothian. Addressing this issue can be challenging as the majority of public transport in the area is commercial, and outwith the control of East Lothian Community Planning Partnership. However, the Council does subsidise some bus services, and the NHS and the voluntary sector also provide many vital transport services in our communities. Read more about GETTING AROUND

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2012

Mrs Baird's S2 and S3 classes have been reflecting on the theme of "Speak Up Speak Out" for Holocaust Memorial Day 2012.

They have been looking at past and present case studies as well as looking at examples abroad and within the UK where the language of hatred has been prevalent.

To commemorate the day, pupils have been making class 'Posters of Hope'. These have included collages of candles as symbols of light and hope as well as personal messages of encouragement from the pupils to the world. Read more about HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2012

3 February 2012

At the end of last week, a group of intrepid teachers (Mr Jappy, Ms McPhee, Mrs Barber and Mrs Slowther) travelled to the Czech Republic and Poland as part of the Comenius project linked to the school in Karvina. On Thursday, they visited Auschwitz Birkenau and this proved to be a very moving experience. As the focus of the project is the environment, on Friday they drove to Pustevny, a small mountain village in the Beskydy Mountains, and walked to the top of Radhost (a mountain) to see the Church of St Cyril and Methodius (staff reported that this was very lovely but extremely cold). 27 January 2012

Fourteen pupils from Knox Academy are involved in the National Theatre of Scotland's Exchange programme. Last Sunday, a group of them attended a master class with the playwright, director and performer Johnny McKnight. The master class focused on stage presence and was excellent. It was wonderful that two of the pupils, F Duncan and J Hardie, were able to meet him, as they are performing a scene from one of his plays for their Acting Skills Unit. Over lunch, Mr McKnight was kind enough to speak to them in-depth and gave them good advice. Read more about 27 January 2012
