HEAD TEACHER'S UPDATE 22 NOVEMBER 2024

Staffing

Curriculum Leader of Maths and Computing post closes this Sunday. In the interim Andrea Campbell and Alicia Coyle are sharing the acting CL post.

Prelims (S4-S6)

These started this morning. A reminder that pupils should arrive at least ten minutes prior to their exam with all the necessary equipment. Mobile phones and smart watches should be switched off and left in bags at the back of the exam hall. Good luck to all of our pupils and try to see it not as a test but more of an opportunity to show us what you know. Keep studying throughout these and please continue to attend your classes when you are not in a prelim as learning and teaching will continue as normal to ensure we get through all the courses by the end of April.

Children in Need

Thank you to all pupils, parents/carers and staff, across Knox Academy and our associated primaries, who donated to this amazing charity. We raised £824.58 this year (and possibly more as a number of us also donated via a QR code). A great community effort!

Lil ReUse Fest 2024 (last Saturday at Knox Academy)

Lil would like to thank the Knox Academy community for its wonderful support for the ReUse Fest on 16 November. Thanks to your donated items, shopping and the incredible volunteering from Meadowpark young people, and others, we collectively kept 1567kg of items in circulation (plus 7 bikes). This has a huge carbon impact, at some estimates up to 39,175kg of CO2e, as well as helping combat the cost of living & over-consumption crises.

PTA – Hamper donations

Final plea - Knox Academy Support Group (PTA) is excited to announce its first fundraising event of the school year at the S1 Christmas Fair in December. We are raffling off Xmas Hampers and would be extremely grateful for any donations. We are looking for and not limited to, Christmas puddings, mince pies, Christmas cake, chocolates, sweets, tea, coffee, jam, chutney, soup, biscuits, crisps, cheese crackers and oatcakes. Please hand in any donations to Ms Borwick in the PE Department by no later than Friday 29th November. Thank you in advance for your support!

Jericho Youth Café

This runs the first Saturday of every month from 7-9pm, at the Nungate and Haddington Community Centre. It is for pupils from S1-S6 and offers them the chance to meet other young people and play games (pool, table tennis, PS4 etc.) and there is juice and snacks provided too.

Pupils’ Successes

Swimming

East Lothian & Borders Swimming Championships

Congratulations to the following pupils who swam and medalled in these championships: Branna Kenny (S1) Emma Carmichael, Murray Hutchison, Emily Westgarth (all S2); Morven Kenny and Boyd Fearnside (S3). These talented athletes achieved incredible results, collectively earning: 8 Gold Medals, 2 Silver Medals and a Bronze Medal

They are now eagerly awaiting confirmation to see if any of them will qualify to compete in the Scottish National Schools Final this January. Fingers crossed for you all!

Congratulations to Murray Calder (S5) who has successfully completed his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and to Louis Clark (S4) on completing his Bronze Award.  Both were presented with their certificates earlier this week.
