It is a cruel irony that the word "tsunami" comes from the Japanese language, and means a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance.  It is not much more than a hundred years old: "tsu" is harbour and "nami" is wave.  Watching the recent horrible events on television, the meaning is there: the wave that comes over the harbour.
