S5/6 Parents’ Evening

Thank you to all parents/carers who came along last night to hear about your young person’s progress and next steps as they move towards their SQA exams in April/May. Speaking to many of you I know you found the conversations with teachers extremely useful and really valued the face/face interactions. If you were unable to make the evening for any reason, and would like to discuss your young person’s progress, please contact their House Team. Thank you.

S3 Work Experience- Can you help us?

We were very excited this week to share our plans for S3 Work Experience.  This is taking place from 27 – 31 May 2024 and it is the first time we have been able to offer this opportunity in a number of years.

In order to make this as successful as possible, we would very much welcome your help.  Would you, or someone you know, be able to accommodate a pupil for a week’s work experience?  The pupils have to find their own placements but changes in working arrangements for a number of employers have made it more challenging for pupils to find employers able to take them.

We would be very grateful for any help you can offer and hope that this fantastic opportunity will make pupils even more aware of their options after school.

If you can help in any way, please email workexperience@knox.elcschool.org.uk

Digital Academy

Education Scotland is looking into a Digital Academy and wants to hear from S3-S6 pupils to get their ideas about what this should look like. They want to ensure that young people have a big say in the design of it. Please can I ask you to encourage your young person/people to complete this as this is a really important step forward for our learners (and future young people) and how we can work flexibly in the future to meet their needs. The survey closes on 29 February - so not long! Please click on this link to access it. Thank you for your support with this.

S1 STEM Event – Tuesday 20 February

This week it was the turn of S1 to take part in a 1hr 40 minutes workshop led by SSE Renewables.  There were three sessions – one for each house.  SSE Renewables will soon start work on the Berwick Bank Wind Farm which will potentially generate enough electricity to power Scotland three times over.

The pupils learned amazing facts such as the blades of each turbine will be longer than a football pitch, weigh the same as 10 elephants and be wide enough to drive a double decker bus through.

As with the S2, it was amazing to see the quality of the posters that S1 designed at the end of the session, which was based on what they had learned throughout. Many were happy to stand up and present the information from their posters, to their peers, which showed the aims of developing the skills of problem solving, creativity, teamwork and speaking had been achieved.

Berwick Bank is on track to be fully operational in 2030 so there is even a chance that some of the pupils involved in the workshops will gain employment on this project.

Many thanks, to Pauline Allison, Ciara Jamieson and Rowan Boswood from SSE Renewables who ran the workshop. (By Mr Taylor, Curriculum Leader of Science)

Parent Reps for Education Appeals

We are recruiting parent representatives for this years’ Education Appeals. This would most likely only take up 1 full day around the end of May.  There is no specific criteria for a parent rep, you just need to have a child within a school in East Lothian and you will never be asked to make decisions relating to the school your child attends.

If you are interested please contact Megan Scott, Committees Officer directly on mscott1@eastlothian.gov.uk or 01620 827514.
