HEAD TEACHER'S UPDATE 27 AUGUST 2021

It has been great to visit classes this week and speak to young people in all year groups. They seem to have got in to the groove very quickly, and our new S1s, apart from a few navigation problems getting to the odd class, have too. Well done to all! It is fantastic to have everyone back.

Staffing

The following staff started with us in August:

  • Laura Bates – Teacher of Biology
  • Dionne Hogg – Pupil Support Worker
  • Ally Fairbairn – ASN Auxiliary
  • Katherine Balsillie – Teacher of ASN (Meadowpark)
  • Warwick Wilson – Teacher of ASN (Meadowpark)

Change to School Term Dates

Following consultation, the Christmas holidays dates have been revised. We will now break on Friday 17 December and resume on Wednesday 5 January.  The summer term will also finish a day later now, on Friday 1 July 2022. Full details of the term dates are available here.

Covid-19

Please report all positive cases to covidinschools@eastlothian.gov.uk or if you do not have access to email, telephone 01875 613921. Please do not send pupils to school who have symptoms. They should self-isolate and book a PCR test and not return to school until they know this is negative and they have no symptoms.

LFD testing – Thank you to those pupils who have consented to take part in this programme of testing twice weekly and reporting these results online. Again, if positive LFD test is given, please self-isolate and book a PCR test.  If you wish to sign up for LFD testing please complete the online consent form.  LFD test kits can be picked up by pupils first thing in the morning or at reception any time during the school day.

Flu Vaccination – Tuesday 21 September 2021

Consent forms have now been given out to all year groups. NHS recommends all young people take up the flu vaccination for the following reasons: The flu vaccine will reduce the risk of your child getting or spreading flu to friends and family who are at greater risk from flu and coronavirus, such as grandparents or people with health conditions.

  • From academic year 2021/22, the flu vaccine is available to all primary and secondary school pupils.
  • Nasal flu vaccine will be provided for most pupils.
  • Please note that for the very few pupils who require the flu vaccine injection for clinical or religious reasons, the Community Vaccination Team will provide injections in school, on the day of the school session.
  • Community Vaccination Team (CVT) clinics will be offered to children who cannot receive for clinical reasons, are home-schooled or who miss their session date.
  • Please fill in the consent form that your child brought home and return the completed form to the school ASAP!

Extra-curricular Activities (Active Schools)

You can sign your young person up to Extra Curricular Activities here.  We have Girls Fitness, Netball and Basketball all starting next week. We look forward to seeing everyone getting active.

If anyone has any issues signing up to classes please get in contact with Thomas Salkeld at tsalkeld@elcschool.org.uk

Parent/Carer Survey – Cycling Friendly School Status Award – August 2021

At Knox Academy, we have been working hard to achieve our Cycle Friendly School Status Award with Cycling Scotland. As part of our application, we need to create a School Travel Plan which includes information from parents and carers. We would be grateful if you could take the time to complete this very short Travel to School Survey to support our efforts. Thank you.

Dates for you diary (please also see the School Calendar for overview and updates):

Tuesday 7 September - Parent Council Meeting (online)   6.30-8pm (online)

If you wish to join our Parent Council Meeting it would be great to have you along (especially our new S1 parents/carers).  To join, please email our Chair of the Parent Council: parentcouncil@ka-net.org.uk.

Thank you to many of our new S1 parents/carers who are now following us on Twitter. This is the best place to get instant news from the school so I would highly recommend this. If you have still to give us your email address, which we use as our first source of communication with parents/carers, please do so by emailing admin@knox.school.org.uk . Thank you.

Enjoy the weekend and remember, Haddington Farmers Market is on this weekend so good to support our local producers if you can.
