Monday 18th March was World Recycling Day. Every year, the Earth yields billions of tons of natural resources and at some point, in the not too distant future, it will run out. Recycling is a key part of the circular economy, helping to protect our natural resources.

Everyone at Knox Academy can do their part to keep our community tidy and eco-friendly. For example, at break and lunch, everyone should put their litter in bins and their recyclable waste (e.g. plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and cardboard) in the recycling boxes in classrooms. We all play a role in keeping our school corridors clean and minimising the amount of waste going to landfill. Click here and here to watch a few videos about the importance of recycling.

Since 2019 Knox Academy has recognised achievement in school based extra-curricular and non-school based wider achievements through the award of Achievement Ties.  The Achievement Ties committee meets twice yearly to discuss nominations and allocation of Achievement Ties. There are two categories of Achievement Tie that can be awarded 'half colours' and 'full colours'.  There will be a presentation to all pupils on later this month during registration which outlines how pupils may achieve these awards.

The committee would like to stress that staff and pupils can also nominate pupils for the awards.

Nominations are now open and can be completed through a Google Form(link is external).

For information on eligibility for the awards please see the Achievement Ties 2024 document.  There will be a virtual assembly for pupils during registration next week informing pupils about the awards and how they might achieve them.

The deadline for the first of two nomination periods this academic year will be Friday 19th April 2024.  Any applications received after this date will role on to the next round of nominations in November 2024.

If you are willing to join the pupil committee who help make judgments on awards please come and speak with Mr Clark.

Today, we are sharing information on Young Carers Action Day. A young carer is someone under 18, or who is 18 but still at school who provides unpaid help and support. This can be to a relative, friend or neighbor who due to to illness or disability cannot manage to live independently without their help. Some children and young people will have small caring roles, and some will have big caring roles. You might share this caring role with another sibling or an adult carer.

Last year's Young Carer survey detailed that 1 in 3 young carers struggle to balance caring with education whether that be at school, or moving into further education or jobs. In order to raise awareness of Young Carers further information will be shared during registration time for the remainder of this week.

The Health and Wellbeing faculty would also ask that all pupils complete a short Google Form during registration this week.

Pupils sitting National 5 Practical Cookery will be involved in their final practical exam all week (Monday 18 - Friday 22 March 2024).  Pupils will be out of class on a rotation basis and only be absent from classes one half day across the whole of this week.

A schedule of pupils being assessed and times they will be out of class will be sent to all staff - so teachers will know when you should be back in their classes.

Pupils can double check their assessment time with their HE teacher and on the notice board in the HE department.  DO NOT miss your designated assessment time as you are unlikely to get another chance.  This is a huge part of your final grading for this course award.
