This month Knox Academy is celebrating LGBT+ History Month!

What is it?

LGBT+ History Month was founded in 2005 by the charity Schools OUT to mark the anniversary of the abolition of Section 28. It is a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, achievements, while remembering the struggles and activism that paved the way for progress over the years.

How are we celebrating?

  • Corridor Timeline: There is a timeline of key LGBT+ History events in the corridor from the office to the social area. Have a look. Then return to your registration classes to discuss - are there any dates that you found surprising?
  • Online Assembly: There will be an online assembly on Thursday 26th February during registration ran by the LGBT+ Allies club.
  • School Wide Competition: The LGBT+ Allies Club are running a school wide competition for you to submit a profile of an LGBT+ Icon. This profile could take the form of a digital/hand drawn poster, a mind map, or whatever you like, as long as you've chosen an LGBT+ icon that inspires you. The person could be alive or dead. Include information on their lives, what they achieved, and why they inspired you. More details to come in the assembly on Thursday.

Thanks for your support and remember, LGBT+ History is still being made by us every day through the way we choose to treat one another.

To celebrate LGBT+ History Month, the LGBT+ ALLIES group have put a timeline of key dates in history that have impacted the lives of LGBT+ people. This can be found along the corridor between the food court and reception. The reason we remember these key moments in history is because of the discrimination and hatred that they have experienced but also to celebrate landmark changes and progression within the community. Please take the time to read these, we hope you enjoy learning about the history.

Thanks,

LGBT+ ALLIES
