A Word from Miss Cook, Head Teacher

Staffing

Congratulations to Ms McBride, our PT Equity, who was appointed to the DHT Outreach post for the next 23 months. She will be amazing at this. This now creates a Modern Languages position at our school and the advert will go live for this in a few weeks.

SQA

In keeping with last year, the Appeals Service will continue to be free and available for learners to access directly if they are concerned about a National 5, Higher or Advanced Higher grade and feel there may have been a mistake in the marking.

You can appeal directly to the SQA but we would ask that as soon as you return to school on Wednesday 14 August, you speak to the Curriculum Leader of the subject you would like to appeal in us and we can discuss this with you. Ms Machen is our SQA Coordinator this year so she will also be able to assist you.

The SQA’s Appeals Service will open on Results Day, Tuesday 6 August at 9 am, and the learner direct submission deadlines are: Tuesday 13 August at 11.59 pm for priority appeals and Tuesday 27 August at 11.59pm for all other appeals. Your appeal can only be prioritised if you have a conditional place at university or college, or in training or employment that depends on your grade.

What is the Appeals Service?

If you appeal your grade, a senior appointee will carry out a marking review of your SQA-marked assessments. This is not a re-mark. A marking review checks that: all parts of your SQA-assessments have been marked; the marking is in line with national standards; the marks given for each answer have been totalled correctly; and the correct result has been entered on our system.

Please note that after being reviewed, your result could stay the same, go up or go down.

Evening of Celebration

This will take place on Thursday 20 June, with the S1-S2 ceremony at 6pm and the S3-S6 ceremony at 8pm. All young people receiving awards should have their invite by this Friday at latest. The S1-S2 awards are based on academic attainment in subjects and each subject area (not teacher) can nominate up to a maximum of twenty pupils in each year group. By awarding twenty pupils in each subject area we hope to create ‘ambition’ in our young people that will carry their work ethic through to S3 and beyond.  In S3-S6, pupils have selected their subjects, and hence our award process changes to reflect this, with only one pupil being awarded in each subject area e.g. in Biology – it will be the top performer in this subject in terms of academic attainment (highest percentage in all tests across the year).

S5 and S6 pupils

As we have now started the new timetable all S5 pupils should have full timetables (no blank periods at all) and all S6 pupils may have some non-contact periods, which they should use for study, volunteering or work experience. All S5 and S6 pupils must attend registration each morning as often this is when important information is disseminated or we call assemblies. S5/6 have elected to return to school and must show commitment to achieving their best throughout the year.

Grease

A reminder that tickets are now on sale for the school musical - Grease. Performances will be on 17 June & 18 June at 19.30pm each evening. The cast has been working tirelessly on this production for the whole year, and are very excited to perform. Tickets are on sale every lunch time in the school canteen and cost £7 for adults and £5 children/concessions.

Quadrant

A final reminder to submit any designs to  njones@knox.elcschool.org.uk by Friday 7 June at latest. Thank you.

Successes

Rugby

A huge congratulations to Aidan Smith, Andrew Millar and Hamish Mainstone who have been invited to train with the Scottish Rugby Academy for the season 2024-25. This is the highest level they can reach within Scottish Rugby at their age group. All three players have accepted this place and are now Academy supported players. This is a massive achievement, and we are very proud of them. Their hard work, determination and commitment to rugby has been incredible. They are great ambassadors for our school and give as much dedication to their studies as they do to their rugby too. We are very excited to see what the future brings for them!

A huge congratulations to Lewis Oliver and Fraser Hamilton (S3) who have been selected for the U16 East Lothian and Borders training squad.

Haddington Festival

Congratulations to Hannah McBride who was nominated for Champion Teacher of the Year in the East Lothian Courier Community Champion Awards. Congratulation to Robert Flood who was also recognised as one of Haddington’s Heroes.
